Maths teacher education

Mathematical knowledge for teaching

Teaching and learning of algebra, financial maths, functions and trigonometry

I started my career in the early 90's as a high school teacher of Mathematics and Computer Studies, in state schools in the Johannesburg area. I moved to Wits in the late 90's and have been involved in mathematics teacher education in various capacities since then. From 2002 to 2009 I headed up the team working in the undergraduate mathematics education programme. This involved conceptualising, designing, teaching and revising mathematics and mathematics methodology courses for teachers. Since 2010 I have been working in the Wits Maths Connect Secondary Project, where I am project manager and lead the professional development component of the project. I am also supervising postgraduate students whose research is related to key aspects of the project. I completed my doctorate in mathematics teacher education in 2013, focusing on the learning of pre-service secondary mathematics teachers in a course on financial maths within the undergraduate programme.

I have led several materials development projects related to the undergraduate maths eduation programme, including:

Calculus for Teaching (in collaboration with UKZN and NMMU)

Case Studies of Teaching

- Equations in Grade 9

- Congruence
