Professor de Koning’s research focuses on: the development of new routes to synthesize aromatic and heteroaromatic systems, and their applications to the assembly of aromatic natural products, such as cardinalin 3 and anhydrofusarubin. Transition metal-mediated reactions are used for constructing and functionalizing condensed aromatic, heteroaromatic and polyaryl systems, with palladium and ruthenium used extensively in our work. The former metal is used to mediate reactions such as the Suzuki coupling reaction or stereoselective cyclization reactions. While the transition metal ruthenium is used for mediating ring closing metathesis reactions for the assembly of aromatic rings. Recent work has involved the synthesis of aromatic and heteroaromatic systems such as xanthones, imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines and azaindoles for antibacterial, antiparasitic, antifungal and anticancer screening, as well as the synthesis of compounds to facilitate nucleic acid transduction.
