BioBank Facility

The SBIMB BioBank is situated at 9 Jubilee Road and is hosted by the Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience, a Wits 21st Century Institute.  It is housed in a newly renovated building. We aim to ensure high quality and quantity of DNA samples are obtained, to facilitate future collaborative research.

The storage laboratory houses DNA samples collected from various university collaborative research projects. Currently we plan to store samples collected from the following research projects within this facility:

  • African Wits-INDEPTH Genomics (AWI-Gen) project samples, a study under the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3A) Initiative
  • Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit (DPHRU) project samples, linked to various projects such as Birth-to-Twenty (Bt20)
  • Glaucoma and Rheumatoid Arthritis project samples.

Blood and/or DNA will be stored.  There are currently no immediate plans to store tissues.

Automated DNA extraction platforms equip this facility to extract DNA from buffy coats or saliva using a QIAsymphony extraction system. A separate PCR laboratory complements this platform by providing all the necessary equipment for pre- and post-PCR procedures. Ultra low temperature freezers (-86°C) and 4°C storage fridges will be monitored and regularly checked to ensure integrity of all samples.
