Quantum Computing Summer School

The first Quantum Computing Summer School in South Africa is being hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand, in collaboration with IBM, the JCSE, WIDS, and ARUA in December 2019.  The aim of the School is to bring students, researchers, and businesses together to learn how quantum computing can accelerate and empower the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in Africa.

The aim of the Summer School is in line with the larger goal of Quantum Computing at Wits: to make Africa quantum ready. Attendees will learn how the IBM Q computers operate on a hardware level as well as how to write a program that can exploit the exponential power of quantum mechanics.

Prerequisite Knowledge

  • Good mathematics: complex linear algebra.
  • Understanding of the properties of quantum mechanics: e.g. superposition, entanglement, interference.
  • Some programming experience: Python is preferable.

Location and Dates

The Summer School is being hosted at the University of the Witwatersrand Science Stadium on Main Campus West, Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The school will run from 2 December - 10 December 2019.

Rooms, including breakfast and dinner, are available in student residences nearby. Alternatively, there are some suggested hotels. Bookings for rooms at the residences are available through the same platform used to register. A residence room with breakfast will cost R50 per night.

  • Registration closes on 22 November 2019
  • Residence room bookings close on 15 November 2019

Ticket purchases are made through Quicket here. There are separate tickets for students, academics, and industry. There is a special ticket option that includes student residence accommodation for the duration of the summer school. If you cannot afford the ticket prices, you may apply for a bursary through the following form.

Getting to the Venue

The venue is the Wits Science Stadium on the Wits Main Campus West in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. For attendees traveling from outside of South Africa, a VISA letter is available on request. Please allow for adequate lead time to ensure your VISA application is approved in good time before travel.

If you are commuting in from the Gauteng area, or staying nearby in a hotel or student residences, there is parking available on campus. This link will help you in navigating to the venue.

Qiskit Camp Africa, 2019

There is another Quantum Computing event immediately after the summer school in South Africa - the Qiskit Camp Africa. It is run separately to the Summer School and is by invitation only. Attendees must be nominated to be considered for the event. For more information, click here
