Sumaya Mall

Dr Sumaya Mall is a senior lecturer in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Her research focal areas are nested within the fields of psychiatric and lifecourse epidemiology and the broad area of the social and biological determinants of mental illness.

Dr Sumaya Mall is a senior lecturer in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Wits School of Public Health. She took up this position in August 2016 after participating in numerous studies of mental illness including community based mental health surveys and a study of gene environment interactions in schizophrenia. To date she has over 30 peer reviewed publications and has presented at numerous national and international conferences.

Her research focal areas are nested within the fields of psychiatric and lifecourse epidemiology and the broad area of the social and biological determinants of mental illness. Currently her research examines the relationship between early childhood adversity and physical and mental health outcomes in adulthood. She is supervising several post graduate students at Wits who are working in the areas of HIV and mental health, post traumatic stress disorder and obesity and victimization. 

Dr Mall completed a Masters in Public Health degree from the University of Cape Town, a Masters in Science in epidemiology from Columbia University in the United States of America and a PhD from Stellenbosch University.
