MID-YEAR APPLICATIONS WILL BE OPEN FROM 3 APRIL TO 15 JUNE 2018

Introductory certificate

The Introduction to Corporate Governance and Administration is a first level course in the field of Governance and Administration. It offers a broad-based business education and gives you the professional status of a Licentiate CIBM granted by Chartered Secretaries Southern Africa (CSSA).

This course provides a foundation and practical knowledge in:

  • Economics
  • Communications
  • General Principles of Commercial Law
  • Financial Accounting I

This certificate will provide you with the knowledge and skills required in a variety of workplaces where an understanding of business economics, communication, law and finance is necessary. This course is the springboard to the next levels – and comes with the quality assurance linked to an institution such as Wits.

Intermediate certificate

The Intermediate course in Corporate Governance and Administration is a second level course which offers a broad-based business education to learners who want to advance their career by becoming an CIBM Associate – a status granted by Chartered Secretaries Southern Africa (CSSA).

The Intermediate course in Corporate Governance and Administration on NQF level 6 builds on the introductory course. It is ideal for those who wish to work in a supervisory to junior managerial level (for example, assistant manager) and is a pre-qualification for the next level of management.

This certificate will enable you to read a balance sheet, complete a tax return, understand legal issues, understand information and communication technology systems and what business management is about.

The following courses are required to complete this certificate:

  • Advanced Commercial Law
  • Financial Accounting II
  • Management Information Systems
  • Management Principles
  • Taxation

The certificate (NQF Level 6) is the basis required to apply for the Advanced Certificate (NQF Level 7), which is the level that enables you to take the professional examinations offered by CSSA (and internationally recognised qualifications).

The course remains broadly focused but introduces management knowledge. There is a definite shortage of people qualified to work at this level in the formal sector of the economy,  so there is a definite demand for this course in the Government, NGO and business environments.

Advanced certificate

The Advanced Certificate in Corporate Governance and Administration is a third level course certificate in the field of Governance and Administration. This offers a broad-based business education to learners who wish to aspire to the Associate CIBM professional status granted by Chartered Secretaries Southern Africa (CSSA).

Building on the knowhow gained by studying the Intermediate Certificate, this certificate programme focuses on governance – and is geared to create competency at a senior level in an organisation. It is geared to equip senior managers and administrators in the public and private sectors with the theoretical knowledge of business governance, administration and strategic issues.

The certificate covers the following courses (covering the requirements of both the public and private sectors):

  • Corporate Law
  • Financial Accounting III
  • Management Accounting
  • Strategic Management

There is a great need for trained and skilled managers and administrators in the public and private sectors in South Africa – and this is especially important given the need for people qualified in governance to develop and guide our young democracy appropriately.

Successful learners will be able to undertake leadership roles with confidence, be able to motivate their staff, understand and advise on legal and accounting matters, and also contribute to corporate strategic planning. Should there be no opportunities for advancement in their present career positions successful learners will be highly marketable and more mobile in the job market. By applying the knowledge and skills acquired, they will be able to become successful managers and administrators of high performing departments or teams. These skills could also be applied to work within the NGO sector.
