BCom/BA Degree with Law

Wits Plus is now offering Bachelor of Commerce with Law and Bachelor of Arts with Law degrees on the part-time facility.

All the Wits degrees are double major degrees. Students will be studying towards a BA or BCom degree with Law as one of the majors instead of another BA or BCom course.

BCom Degree with Law
The BCom gives you excellent training in critical thinking skills combined with a breadth of professional business knowledge. The specialised BCom with Law degree is suitable for students who are interested in a specific field in business but who also wish to have a background in law.

BA Degree with Law
The BA degree provides superb training in critical thinking skills, exposure to new ideas, analysis of problems, creative thinking and problem solving. The BA with Law is the foundation for a more advanced study of law.

Entrance requirements

Bachelor of Arts with Law
Automatic entry into the BA with Law degree will require a Matric with full exemption and an admission rating score of 26 (prior to 2008). If you matriculated after 2008, the NSC rating applies and you require at least 43 points.

Success in English on Higher Grade (first or second language) with a symbol of D or above is essential for admission to Wits University, prior to 2008, or after 2008, English HG or first additional language - level 5 or higher. You also need to have passed Maths Literacy (Level 4 and Higher) or Mathematics on HG or SG.

Mature Students:
Applications from students currently studying Law at other institutions, and who do not have an undergraduate degree, will be considered if they have passed at least three courses at that institution, two of which must be Law courses. If applicants do not meet this requirement, they will have to apply for the general BA or BCom and then convert once they have successfully completed their first year of study.

Students who have completed National Diplomas or BTech degrees, will be allowed to enrol for the BA or BCom general degree first and can convert once they have successfully completed the first year of study.

In cases where students already hold a degree and want to enrol for a full degree with Law (e.g. engineers looking for a full degree), their first degree will be accepted as meeting the entry requirements, but they will not be credited for courses passed in the previous degree. Students who already have degrees will be allowed to register for Law courses for non-degree purposes as occasional students.

Study requirements

Wits Plus students are required to do the following:

You need to attend lectures on the Braamfontein West Campus in the evening. Students attend lectures one evening a week for each course being studied.

Normally part-time students are allowed to register for a maximum of three (3) full year courses or six (6) modular courses in a year. Experience has shown to us that it is very difficult for students to cope with more courses while working and also maintaining a healthy family life.

Lectures are usually held in the evenings (17:30-21:00) but specified courses or tutorials may be held on Saturday mornings (09:00-13:00).

This may be subject to change depending the final timetable.
