Entrance requirements

Admission requirements for the BCom include a Matriculation exemption certificate, with a demonstrated competence in Mathematics (HG-D symbol or SG-B symbol) if you matriculated prior to 2008. If you matriculated AFTER 2008, you need pure Maths level 5 in the NSC. You also need to have passed English HG - first or second language - with at least a D symbol prior to 2008 or English Home Language or first Additional Language from 2008 on level 5.

For automatic entry into the BCom, a matriculation exemption and a matric admission rating score of 26 with Mathematics and English is required if you matriculated prior to 2008. Subsequent to 2008, you need to have 39 points, in addition to the above Maths and English requirements.

Students with credits from Unisa or other South African universities may be considered for certain credits or exemptions, on condition that they meet the entry requirements as detailed above.

Students who meet all the above entrance requirements, but who narrowly miss the Maths requirement, need to first complete a Maths for Access certificate course for a year (also offered by Wits Plus). If they pass Maths for Access with an average of at least 70%, they can apply for admission to the BCom degree.

Course structure

The Wits Plus Bachelor of Commerce degree is a nine-course curriculum including two majors spread over three levels.

You earn points as you progress through courses, with a minimum total of 432 points required for completion of the degree, which can take you between 4 to 6 years as a part-time student.

Students who have been accepted into our BCom programme, will be assisted with the choice of their courses and planning of their studies.

Study requirements

Wits Plus students are required to do the following:

You need to attend lectures on the Braamfontein West Campus in the evening. Students attend lectures one evening a week for each course being studied.

Normally part-time students are allowed to register for a maximum of two (2) full year courses or four (4) modular courses in a year. Experience has shown to us that it is very difficult for students to cope with more courses while working and also maintaining a healthy family life.

Lectures are usually held in the evenings (17:30-21:00) and specified courses or tutorials may be held on Saturday mornings (09:00-13:00).

This may be subject to change depending the final timetable.
