The University has ranked eighth in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2017.
The announcement made on 30 November 2016 is significant for the University as its inclusion in the THE BRICS & Emerging Economies rankings is a noteworthy achievement: Wits is one of the top 300 institutions in the 50 countries included in the analysis.
Says Phil Baty, Editor, THE World University Rankings: "It is no easy task to appear in the 2017 BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings, which use the same 13 rigorous and demanding performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings.
“Institutions must demonstrate high standards of performance across teaching, research, international outlook and knowledge transfer and compete with other leading research universities across 50 emerging economy countries. We only rank the very best universities from this cohort so to make the top 300 list is a great achievement in itself and University of the Witwatersrand should be heartily congratulated."
Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research at Wits, says the University is pleased with its performance in the rankings. “The past few years, we have significantly increased our research output and have had an increase in the number of highly rated scientists. Leading local and international scholars have also joined the University and we now host the largest number of DST/NRF Centres of Excellence in the country. This is part of Wits’ commitment to being a nationally responsive and globally competitive institution.”
