What is Wits Fund?

Wits Fund is an independent non-profit registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. It was formed by a group of Wits University alumni to raise funds in the United States for approved programs and purposes at Wits University, and to provide U.S.-based donors with a way to make a donation to Wits that is tax-deductible in the United States. Under U.S. law, contributions to Wits Fund are deductible for tax purposes if: (a) Wits Fund reviews and approves the Wits project as being in furtherance of Wits Fund's own exempt purposes; and (b) Wits Fund maintains full control and discretion as to the use of the contributions.

Can I give a donation to Wits Fund for a specific purpose at Wits University?

Donors can request that their contributions be designated for a specific purpose or program at Wits. However, the funds will only be transmitted to Wits once Wits Fund has conducted its own screening and approval of such purposes or programs.

Is Wits Fund part of Wits University?

No, Wits Fund is an independent, U.S.-based non-profit organization, with its own Board of Directors. Pursuant to U.S. law, the BOD retains full control over disbursement of all funds given to Wits Fund.

How does Wits Fund disburse funds to Wits University?

Three to four times a year, the Board of Directors of Wits Fund transfers donated funds to a variety of approved projects and programs at Wits University.
