DESCRIPTION:Trésors des Poubelles Reimagined is a research-creation session situated in Johannesburg.Trésors des Poubelles Reimagined is a research-creation session situated in Johannesburg that interrogates the persistence of apartheid as both a historical structure and a living infrastructure. Developed in dialogue with archival materials from the Cinémathèque Afrique and grounded in South African visual histories, the project treats the archive not as a stable record, but as a site of ongoing struggle over memory, erasure, and visibility. Working with discarded and degraded film materials that might be understood as the residual matter of apartheid’s visual economy, the project mobilises artificial intelligence and extended reality (XR) to reprocess these fragments into unstable, speculative forms. These immersive technologies systems are intentionally trained on incomplete and biased datasets, foregrounding how contemporary algorithmic systems inherit and extend earlier regimes of racial classification, spatial segregation, and epistemic exclusion. In this sense, the work traces a continuum from apartheid’s bureaucratic and cartographic logics to present-day forms of data governance, predictive surveillance, and digital bordering.
<br />This live artistic intervention is an Afri-Sci archival performance that brings together Nhlanhla Michael Dhlamini and Andile Nzuza in a speculative exploration of resistance, memory, and African cinematic heritage. Combining immersive XR, AI-generated moving image, live performance, sound, dance, and storytelling, the work draws on lived experiences to reimagine the archive as a living site of decolonial imagination. Performed through the personas of the Cybershaman Griot and contemporary archive artisans, the intervention traces the digital afterlives of apartheid while activating African science fiction as a methodology for liberation. Audiences will experience VR excerpts, film, performative lecture, wearable sculptures, and experimental installation, culminating in a call to action for the official Tr&eacute;sors des Poubelles Reimagined XR premiere at the Fak&rsquo;ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival. The performance asks how archival memory can become a space for collective resistance and the creation of new African futures.
