IMPACT presents an in-depth artistic response to a scientific subject—the 2.5-2.8-million-year-old Taung skull. This exhibition encapsulates Brenner’s long-term creative engagement with the skull, broadly exploring themes of fragility and survival, destruction and creation, uncertainty, loss, pressure, and chance. Her work draws from the fragmentary nature of archaeological evidence; strikingly combining different mediums and surfaces – from paper, canvas and stone veneer to clay, plaster of paris, bronze and film. Hold Me Said the Earth by Ann Gollifer
‘Hold me said the Earth’ invites us to consider the ways in which our identities are shaped by history, geography, and personal experience.
What ways are our identities shaped by history, geography, and personal experience? A key element in Ann’s work is her use of pigments derived from earth colours found in Botswana, which she transforms into something more than just colour – but vessels of history, culture, and identity.
“Her art is a call to reflection, urging us to consider our own personal mythologies and how they intersect with the larger narratives of race, gender, and nationality” - Khumo Sebambo. Exhibition curated by Kim Karabo Makin.
All works on sale through Guns&Rain Gallery. See the catalogue here. R30/R60 entry, tickets on webtickets or at the door. Extended until 31 March 2025

MOROLA is a testimonial physical theatre piece that tells the story of a mother and daughter—one a perpetrator and the other a survivor—who face each other across wooden tables. The narrative unfolds between these two tables of testimony, bringing the past to light in all its raw brutality and fragility. The piece explores the liberating power of speaking while also emphasizing the importance of listening. It acknowledges that simply speaking will not heal all wounds. The Chorus introduces a method to help bridge the gap between them: PRAYER. This serves as an offering of prayer—a request to heal our land.

A production of the Pitso Ya Kalaneng - A Call to Theatre programme
M E M E [TICS] engages cultural [re]evolution and how we experience ourselves in the world. Through moments of flashbacks the show uses dance and physical storytelling to peak into the past of South Africa and find links between what once was, what today is and considers what tomorrow could be. The play seeks to find parallels between inherited or generational experiences and modern ways of experiencing the world. With a MEME as a unit in which culture can be measured, MEME [tics] presents several moments of cultural evolution and duplication. Continuously reaching back in time as we make sense of the present. Grounding the world, we live in now by referencing the past, indicating how we are not only shaped by our past but that we actively shape ourselves. The show leaves the GenZ with a [re]presentation of culture and ask what MEME’s they will be passing on as digital natives and the lasting effects it could have on generations to come.

Public Lecture: Binaifer Nowrojee: President of the Open Society Foundations
The role of Philanthropy in achieving agreed global compacts transformative national development and sustainable social justice in the global south.
|
The Open Society Foundations and the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI) at Wits Business School are excited to invite you to a public lecture by Binaifer Nowrojee, President of the Open Society Foundations, one of the world’s largest funders of independent groups working for justice, democratic governance, and human rights. This lecture comes at a pivotal time in our history. At the United Nations’ Summit for the Future', held in New York in September 2024, global leaders arrived at a set of agreements - a ‘Pact for the Future’ - which includes safeguarding future generations, international peace and security, science, technology and innovation, digital cooperation, and transforming global governance. In November 2024, Brazil hosted the G20 under the theme ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet’, which focused on the importance of co-ordinated actions to combat climate change, promote a just energy transition, and preserve the environment. These global events have laid the foundation for the 2025 G20 Summit to be hosted by South Africa in 2025, under the theme 'Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability'. The lecture will be followed by a high level panel representing the public, private and philanthropy sectors. In attendance will be the leadership of the university that includes the Vice Chancellor, the Provost and Deans. We look forward to hosting you.

From Deprivation to Mobilisation: Towards a Multideterminant Model of Xenophobic Violence
An ACMS Seminar by Dr Jean Pierre Misago
ACMS Seminar: ‘From Deprivation to Mobilisation: Towards a Multideterminant Model of Xenophobic Violence in South Africa’ by Jean Pierre Misago. Drawing on extensive and comparative qualitative data from a nearly two-decade long and ongoing research, this paper responds to inadequacies and limitations of current causal explanations for xenophobic violence in South Africa. It argues that existing explanations are inadequate as many lack empirical backing and others are incomplete due to their reductionist approach. To address these shortcomings, this paper proposes an empirically based and theoretically informed multideterminant (explanatory) model, which identifies and analyses the roles of – and interconnections between – six key determinants namely: i) socio-economic and political deprivation, ii) xenophobic beliefs, iii) collective discontent, iv) political economy, v) mobilization, and vi) governance. The paper argues that i) these determinants and their interconnections in a value-added process constitute the necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of xenophobic violence, and ii) this multideterminant model consequently provides an adequate and comprehensive explanation of the xenophobic violence in South Africa.

To write or not to write? Reflections on decolonising knowledge production from the margins
Join us for another exciting seminar online or in person.
Researching about people’s lives is an exercise often met with suspicion due to how knowledge may be perceived as extractive and potentially exploitative. As African scholars interested in writing about the lived experiences of marginalised people, we are beleaguered amid calls for decolonising research epistemologies. What constitutes a decolonial approach of doing such studies? What struggles remain visible? Who are we to decide, and does this process not often betray who we are doing it for? If our answers to both these questions come from our positionality, could it not be that we are speaking for others, simply because some have spoken for them before us, in ways that we have decided were not humane? Today, we are compelled to return to questions of the agency of those we write about in negotiating their own lives in-between allegedly marginalising situations. In this seminar inspired by his forthcoming book Can Migration Studies be Decolonized? (Bristol University Press), Dr Kudakwashe Vanyoro comes into conversation with Dr Duduzile Ndlovu and Dr William Mpofu. He invites us to reflect on the idea of decolonising knowledge production from the margins and engage in necessary self criticism about limitations and drawbacks of a decolonial vocabulary and praxis, as we seek to locate ourselves in ongoing debates about what it means to write and think from the margins.

The difficult patient
The ‘difficult patient’: why we need to reframe vulnerability in healthcare
Traditional liberal accounts of autonomy equate vulnerability with a diminishment in one’s autonomy. While this model of vulnerability suggests an increased susceptibility to harm, it may also grant access to specialised services which minimise the potential for harm and support self-determination. However, focusing on an individual’s capability as the measure for autonomy fails to recognise the broader structural inequalities one may face. Specifically, the equation of diminished autonomy with vulnerability raises problems within healthcare such as denial of healthcare, negative clinician views, and under-resourced treatment. In application, I show the effects of this on individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. In response, I offer a solution via feminist relational accounts of autonomy which posit vulnerability as an asymmetrical relationship between individuals and the social and institutional networks they need for self-determination. Through this model, BPD’s vulnerability status is reaffirmed due to the structural stigmas they face from diagnosis to seeking treatment, thus removing the “difficult-patient” status.

The Risks of Mirror Life - Webinar
The Risks of Mirror Life by Wilmot James and James Smith.
Leading scientists recently warned of the unprecedented risks of “mirror bacteria”, synthetic bacteria in which all biomolecules have reversed chirality. Mirror bacteria would likely evade many immune recognition mechanisms and result in other aspects of immunity being impaired, potentially leading to lethal infections in humans, non-human animals and plants. Mirror bacteria would be resistant to infection by bacteriophage, and likely also to predators that typically control bacterial populations. They might therefore disrupt ecosystems and cause severe and irreversible public health and environmental consequences. Containment, countermeasures, and the potential for misuse, all present major challenges. A recent paper in Science calls for further discussion on this topic, and argues that mirror life should not be created.

Reforming global institutions of governance at times of great power rivalry
Wits University and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) are hosting a workshop.
The workshop brings together international, and South African based experts to discuss reform of global governance institutions and Africa’s response.
This year, 2025, marks a historic moment for Africa. For the first time the G20 summit is taking place in Africa amid a whirlwind start to the US President, Donald Trump’s historic comeback to the White House. As such, this African G20 summit takes place within great power rivalry that is threatening progressive institutional reforms and international norms. Pivotal in this disruptive global order are issues of governance, security, and migration. How will these issues play out in this increasingly mercurial geopolitical milieu? Where will Trump’s shock and awe approach leave global governance? How will it affect Africa?
This workshop will tease out these and other questions.

A Comparative Study of Colonial Legacies and Water Governance in South Africa and Zimbabwe
The Global Change Institute invites you to this lunchtime seminar
Public Seminar: Title: A Comparative Study of Colonial Legacies and Water Governance in South Africa and Zimbabwe by Dr Gwinyai Regis Taruvinga
Water governance has been widely debated in the academic field across Africa. Research indicates that the continent relies heavily on water resources for various activities, with agriculture and mining among the dominant sectors utilising this resource. In this context, this paper analyses the institutional framework within the water governance structures of South Africa and Zimbabwe. The paper argues that while progress has been made in developing new water legislation, the legacy of a skewed water system has led to challenges that both countries face in managing water resources.

Time for new Governance conversations: Beyond Afropolitik and Towards Emergent Possibilities
Join Dr Bayo Akomolafe; Former Minister Jay Naidoo and Alinah K. Segobye for a timely re-evaluation of 'Afropolitik' in the context of African governance.
A keynote address by Bayo Akomolafe, with his emphasis on decolonizing thought, embracing complexity, and reimagining our relationship with the world, could significantly contribute to South Africa's proposed "National Dialogue" by offering a powerful framework for navigating the country's deep-seated challenges.
His work invites a shift away from seeking simplistic, divisive solutions and towards embracing the "messiness" of the present, which resonates with the need for a dialogue that acknowledges the multifaceted nature of South Africa's issues. By challenging conventional notions of identity and progress, Akomolafe's address could encourage participants to move beyond entrenched positions and explore new, more relational ways of being together.
His focus on listening to the "more-than-human" world could also prompt a deeper consideration of ecological justice and sustainability within the dialogue, while his emphasis on community and emergence could inspire innovative approaches to social cohesion and transformation. Ultimately, Akomolafe's keynote could serve as a catalyst for a more generative and transformative national conversation, one that prioritizes healing, interconnectedness, and the creation of a more just and sustainable future for all South Africans.

Africa Day with Prof. Thuli Madonsela and Dr Alice Mogwe
Africa Day is a day of reflection on the journey of the African continent towards unity, freedom, and development.
As we mark Africa Day 2025, the continent stands at a critical juncture: facing both enduring challenges and unprecedented opportunities for growth and transformation. The African Union’s theme for 2025 is Justice for Africans and People of African Descent and South Africa, as the host of the G20 Summit, is pursuing the theme of fostering solidarity, equality and sustainable development.
These themes have informed our chosen theme: Justice, Solidarity, Sustainability for Africa: Pathways of Hope and Regeneration for one Africa which seeks to amplify the voices of African citizens and communities striving for inclusive development, accountable governance, and the realisation of Pan-African ideals.
Please join us for an afternoon of thought-provoking discussion, music, and celebration as we consider the next steps towards creating a better Africa for the future, guided by the principles of solidarity and justice.
Keynote Speakers:
We are thrilled to be joined by Professor Thuli Madonsela, director of the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa’s former Public Protector, and a globally recognised human rights activist; and Dr Alice Mogwe, director of the Botswana Centre for Human Rights and president of the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH).

Curators David Paton and Ciara Struwig will offer a deeper understanding of the exhibition, sharing insightful explorations of its themes and artworks.
Weird, Wonderful, Quirky and Peculiar centres on Salvador Dalí’s 1973 Dix Recettes d'Immortalité (Ten Recipes for Immortality), a landmark in his graphic work that offers a window into his surreal and philosophical universe. In response, the curators present a selection of artists books that reflect similarly unusual, humorous, and personal takes on the world.
Visitors will encounter asemic writing, cryptic symbols, and unconventional book forms exploring meaning through visual oddity and material play. From cartographic dreams to pigeon-photographed landscapes, the exhibition invites you to experience the strange and wonderful through the way artists play with the form and function of the book to reveal strange and personal views of the world.

Understanding climate risks with local communities: The case of eMadlangeni, KwaZulu-Natal
Global Change Institute invites you the monthly lunchtime seminar.
Climate change poses a growing risk for rural South African communities which face increased exposure to extreme weather events. Despite these challenges, communities demonstrate coping mechanisms through Indigenous and Local Knowledge (ILK), rooted in traditional practices, environmental indications, and spiritual beliefs.
This paper examines ILK’s role in disaster risk reduction (DRR) using a qualitative case study approach, drawing on focus group discussions and interviews; analyzed through Dekens’ framework including ILK pathways. This paper shows that ILK is transmitted across generations, used by elders for early warning and accessed by youth yet is threatened by globalization and institutional biases. This paper calls for hybrid DRR strategies that integrate ILK with scientific knowledge, promote intergenerational transfer, and support inclusive decision-making, thus contributing to more culturally relevant and community-driven climate resilience efforts.

Title: Traversing the Maze – An Unconventional Career Path From Engineering to Climate Science and Forestry. Presented By : Dr. Caroline Hardy
No-one ever said that your career has to follow a straight path. Dr Caroline Hardy tells the story of a non-linear career trajectory. Starting with studies in Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering, she went on to build a computer-vision-driven self-solving maze system and attended summer school at the European Space Agency (ESA), delving into the depths of Earth Observation. It was during this time that her passion for studying the Earth through remote sensing was sparked. She went on to earn a Master’s and a PhD, focusing her research on using remote sensing data to identify and track hazardous storms and to investigate the surface urban heat island effect.
Amongst other roles, Caroline most recently worked as a principal data scientist where she analyzed hyperspectral data and created image processing routines and statistical tools to support geologists in their quest to identify the minerals which lie beneath the Earth’s surface.

Walkabout at Wits Art Museum
Through the Eye of a Needle: Remembering the Covid-19 Pandemic in 2025.
Join a walkabout at WAM of the newly installed exhibition 2020 Through the Eye of a Needle: Remembering the Covid-19 Pandemic in 2025 curated by Julia Charlton.
Professor Brenda Schmahmann — South African art historian and current South African Research Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture (SARChI) at the University of Johannesburg's Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) — will be in conversation with Julia Charlton, Senior Curator at WAM. Together, they will share reflections and insights into the embroideries on exhibition, created by members of the Mapula Embroidery Project, a community art collective of women embroiderers based in the Winterveld and Hammanskraal.
This year marks five years since the World Health Organisation declared Covid-19 to be a global pandemic. The spread of the disease had devastating consequences worldwide, with appalling loss of life, terrible emotional strain, extreme social disruption and economic devastation. The anniversary offers us the opportunity to reflect on that time by considering an interactive exhibition of embroidered textiles dealing with Covid-19 and its impact on the community.
Museum hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 – 16:00
Exhibition dates: 22 July – 13 September 2025
We look forward to seeing you there!

The structure of the space of gauge invariant operators at finite N

The Mandelstam Institute for Theoretical Physics and the National Institute of Theoretical Physics and Computational Sciences will host a Special Seminar.
Speaker: Robert de Mello Koch (Huzhou U. )
Abstract: The space of invariants for a single matrix is generated by traces containing at most N matrices per trace. We extend this analysis to multi-matrix models at finite N. Using the Molien-Weyl formula, we compute partition functions for various multi-matrix models at different N and interpret them through trace relations. This allows us to identify a complete set of invariants, naturally divided into two distinct classes: primary and secondary. The full invariant ring of the multi-matrix model is reconstructed via the Hironaka decomposition, where primary invariants act freely, while secondary invariants satisfy quadratic relations. Significantly, while traces with at most matrices are always present, we also find invariants involving more than N matrices per trace. The primary invariants correspond to perturbative degrees of freedom, whereas the secondary invariants emerge as non-trivial background structures. The number of primary invariants can be computed by performing a complete gauge fixing, which identifies the number of independent physical degrees of freedom. By comparing the Molien-Weyl partition function to a complementary counting based on the restricted Schur polynomial basis we argue that the number of secondary invariants must exhibit exponential growth of the form e^{cN^2} at large N, with c a constant.

Join Prof Isabel Hofmeyr for a walkabout of her exhibition ‘The Secret Life of Plants in the Barnes Road Herbarium’.
The Barnes Road Herbarium, in Brixton, houses the studio where this exhibition was made. A herbarium is a collection of preserved plant specimens, pressed and mounted on sheets of heavy white paper. The technique used is botanical contact printing (also called ecoprinting), in which plant material is tightly bundled with fabric or paper and boiled or steamed, transferring an imprint of the leaf onto the substrate. The biochemistry of leaves is central to this process and affects the way they print, often producing unexpected results.
Both the herbarium and ecoprinting involve pressed plants to produce forms of botanical illustration, but with a difference.
This exhibition explores and presents imperial technologies of illustration, herbarium sheets and ecoprinting where realistic renditions are disrupted by the secret chemical lives of leaves - revealing the biochemistry of the leaf not visible to the human eye. We witness the death of a leaf in the birth of the image.

The Value of Reparations, or the values of reparation
Anticolonial thinkers such as Gandhi and Fanon saw repair at the level of the self, for both colonizer and colonised, as necessary to decolonization. This lecture reflects on the British backlash against reparations in terms of the failure of this collective shift in consciousness. It explores how attachment to colonial-era values has fuelled both neocolonialism and persistent objections to reparations for colonialism and slavery on practical grounds - such as the difficulty of precisely calculating the colonial drain of wealth. Such objections--and the past itself--turn out to be red herrings in discussion of reparation in our time of climate crisis.

He returns to his alma mater, where as a student, his studio was in a space above the central gallery, now repurposed into offices. For Black Subjects, he stages a monumental sculptural intervention almost directly below this formative location, re-engaging with an institution that has been instrumental in his practice and thinking over two decades. Working across painting, sculpture and video, Nitegeka grounds his practice in a language of abstraction, geometry and colour. The experiential interaction with the work refutes passivity, resulting in a congruence between the body and space.

Parking for the opening event is available in the garage beneath the museum. As Jorissen Street is undergoing an extensive upgrade, there is significant disruption to traffic at present, so please allow for sufficient travel time.

‘Generational activisms: Women and social justice in South Africa.
The role of women in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid has been well documented and much praised. In this special Women’s Month edition of WiCDS Wednesday, we are joined by a panel of female activists to reflect on the intersectional complexities, challenges and joys of women’s activism. Featuring Thato Mphuthi, Enabled Enlightenment; Wendy Isaack, MADRE Global Women’s Rights; Laurel Baldwin-Ragaven, Wits; and Bridget Munnik, Mashup Community Development.

Youngsters (between the ages of 9-12) and their caregivers are invited to this tactile workshop.
Excited and curious about what we would 'pack into our bags if we could take home with us', this hands-on workshop will encourage our young participants to design and construct a small clay container. This is a simple, open box with no lid. The magic lies in the storytelling of this little container: what will you pack inside? Your favourite snacks from home? A map or a compass to guide you home? Could you pack your favourite toy? We will fill our little containers with shapes of what “home” can mean to us. The outside of the box will be decorated with textures and shapes inspired by our external world; using fun textures to press into the clay or making unique patterns. This workshop is about going on an adventure as well as exploration.

BOOK LAUNCH: Trance and Transfiguration in Rock Art and Literature
Trance and Transfiguration in Rock Art and Literature by Richard Alan Northover
The book is a collaboration between archaeology, anthropology, and literary studies, while touching on philosophy and religious studies. It explores the creative role that altered states of culture play in culture and the arts, whether these states are induced though rituals like the trance dance or meditation, or through the consumption of mind-enhancing substances. It presents a multi-voiced dialogue on the highly debated topic of the use of mind-enhancing substances and techniques in art, culture, therapy and religion.

Exhibition: Imagine Visionary Animals, by Erla Haraldsdottir

| Where: |
Origins Centre Braamfontein Campus West |
| Start time: | 8:00 |
| Enquiries: | tammy.hodgskiss@wits.ac.za |
The Origins Centre is excited to present a site-responsive temporary exhibition with Berlin and Johannesburg-based Icelandic artist Erla S. Haraldsdóttir.
The exhibition is on the one hand informed by the hues of materials composing the physical exhibition space of the new wing, and on the other hand underscoring the museum’s core themes – cave paintings and rock engravings. This body of work departs from cave formations. By balancing photorealist and symbolic realism Haraldsdóttir returns to her longstanding investigations into how images can serve as portals – connecting cultural symbols, archetypes, and lived experience across time and place. Through this distinct form of ocular magical realism, the exhibition acknowledges stone surfaces as humankind’s original canvas through an interplay of colour, transparency, light, reflection, and spatial perception.
Curated by Jonatan Habib Engqvist. Supported by The Icelandic Visual Arts Council Erla S. Haraldsdóttir is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose work investigates the boundaries between personal memory, ancestral narrative, and collective myth. Using painting, drawing, printmaking, and collage, Haraldsdóttir draws on diverse visual languages - combining elements of figurative painting with experimental processes, often shaped by site, context, or archival material. Her practice frequently explores the transformative potential of colour and light, and the interplay between materiality and storytelling.

Our Wandering Continents/Nuestros Continentes Errantes’ by Marcela Cabutti
| When: |
Thursday, 30 October 2025 - Saturday, 07 February 2026 |
| Where: |
Origins Centre
|
| Start time: | 18:00 |
| Enquiries: | tammy.hodgskiss@wits.ac.za |
Marcela Cabutti is an Argentine artist, currently in a residency at Origins Centre, Wits, as part of BIENALSUR 2025.
Marcela Cabutti draws on research into geological and historical archives, in which maps and rocks serve as coordinates for a narrative about time and territory. This project particularly highlights the geological contact zones between the Río de la Plata Craton and the Kalahari Craton in Africa, whose geological similarities indicate a common origin. In Our Wandering Continents the artist proposes a reappraisal of what we usually consider motionless, such as continents and tectonic plates, to restore their status as bodies in slow and constant motion, a process that transcends human perception. By preserving the memory of a past union, rocks become an archive; the map a creative fiction; and the Earth a wandering body.
Marcela Cabutti is an Argentine artist, currently in a residency at Origins Centre, Wits, as part of BIENALSUR 2025. She is a contemporary sculptor whose artwork forms a dialogue with the particularities of space, reconfiguring from the direct relationship with their environment.
Made possible by BIENALSUR. Supported by Embassy of Argentina, South Africa.

Invisible Labour: Afghan Migrant Women in Iran’s Labour Market
The GLU Programme extends an invitation for a seminar presented by Visiting Research, Ms Maryam Rahimi from University of Tehran, Iran.
This presentation examines the gendered dimensions of labour among Afghan migrant women in Iran, one of the largest South–South migration corridors. Despite their significant presence in Iran’s workforce, Afghan women remain largely excluded from formal employment and social protection systems. Restrictive migration laws, precarious legal status, and entrenched gender hierarchies have confined them to informal, low-paid, and insecure jobs such as domestic work, cleaning, and small-scale manufacturing.
The study explores the diverse forms of employment available to these women and analyses how the political economy of labour in Iran produces and sustains precarity in their working lives. It also investigates how Afghan women are systematically excluded from labour rights and institutional protections, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and invisibility. At the same time, it highlights how their invisible labour, like unpaid, underpaid, and unrecognized forms of work, contributes substantial value to both household economies and the wider informal labour market, yet remains absent from official statistics and public discourse.
By situating the Iranian case within broader debates on labour, gender, and migration in the Global South, the study contributes to discussions on informality, inequality, and the need for more inclusive labour policies that address the intersection of gender and migration.
Maryam Rahimi is a visiting GLU researcher, and currently a PhD candidate in Social Policy at the University of Tehran, Iran.

Mozambique: The politics of a popular uprising
Dr Ruth Castel-Branco (SCIS) will be talking about the unprecedented popular uprising in Mozambique
Dr Ruth Castel-Branco, Southern Centre for Inequality Studies 23rd October, History Workshop Seminar Room (RS207) Last year, young Mozambicans took the streets in an unprecedented popular uprising. Triggered by systemic electoral fraud, corruption and state violence, the protests marked an important turning point in the country’s political landscape. But underneath these grievances lay longstanding frustrations with the government’s resource-driven development model – a model which has yielded economic growth but has ultimately led to rising poverty, inequality and unemployment.
To manage the expectations of increasingly youthful population, the government has attempted to recast the unemployed as budding entrepreneurs. But as the sign of one protester said: “[Being an] MPESA [agent] is not a job”, it is a strategy of last resort. This paper explores what the impact of Mozambique resource-driven development model have been for the conditions of work and social reproduction. It argues that Mozambique’s looming problems cannot be resolved through technocratic fixes such as skills training, start-up incubation, or minimal cash transfers. Whether the political movement led by Venancio Mondlane can transform into a mass movement that can effectively contest the country’s resource-driven development remains an open question. Ruth Castel-Branco is a Senior Lecturer and coordinator of the Future of Work(ers) Research Group at the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies, University of the Witwatersrand. Her research centres on the political economy of work and labour in Southern Africa, emerging forms of worker struggle and organization, and the redistributive role of the state and social policy. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of the Witwatersrand. The online meeting link can be found here.

NGEZANDLA ZETHU: Stories of African Basketry in Rural Kwazulu
This exhibition was born out of the unrecognised, but vital, role of the basket maker in the collective heritage of rural communities.
This collection of North Nguni baskets deepens our understanding of cultural heritage as a living connection between identity, history and sustainability. Basketry enabled survival in the past, predating pottery in weaving traditions that span about 20 000 years.
This exhibition was born out of the unrecognised, but vital, role of the basket maker in the collective heritage of rural communities. This is an immersive, interdisciplinary exhibition that brings into focus the often-hidden histories of disability and rehabilitation in rural South Africa through the medium of traditional African basketry. These practices are represented here through a collection of baskets produced in three self-help, income-generating projects in remote areas of Natal, Zululand and Maputaland between 1978 and 1990.
Collection and research by Pam McLaren. Curated by Naeema Hussein El Kout and Goeun Botha.
Please RSVP here for the opening event. Remember to bring ID to get onto Wits Campus.
