The primary focus of the Evolution of Complexity Laboratory (ECL) is a curiosity-driven exploration of the molecular and cellular basis for increases in biocomplexity. Typically the evolutionary processes involved in emerging complexity include questions around cooperation and conflict; and our understanding of levels and units of selection. These issues are investigated using cellular and molecular experimental biology, genomics and bioinformatics approaches. Active collaborations with scientists in diverse fields and at other universities make this a stimulating environment. The ECL first started as the Evolutionary Medicine Laboratory in 2011 before moving to its new home in the Evolutionary Studies Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa in 2016. For examples of our contributions, see the Research and Publications pages.
