Postgraduate Studies

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Wits offers a comprehensive range of postgraduate engineering courses and research degrees, which may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. The academics are highly qualified and make the school an internationally recognised centre of learning. Currently, the following qualifications are on offer.

  1. The MSc (Eng) coursework and research degree (ECA00). This requires the successful completion of five 20-credits courses and a 90-credits research project.
  2. The MEng (Professional) degree (ECA01) consisting of seven 20-credits courses and a 45-cedits design project.
  3. The MSc (Eng) research only degree (ERA00) that requires the completion of a 180-credits dissertation.
  4. The PhD degree (EDA02) that requires the completion of a 360-credits thesis that includes significant original contribution to knowledge.

Registration is in January and July each year but applications should be submitted as early as possible, especially by foreign students, to enable formalities to be completed. Details of all postgraduate courses may be obtained from the faculty handbook. Additional information is available here.

Most courses are offered once every two years while some are offered once every year to enable students to build up the requisite number of points in selected fields of specialisation. The courses currently offered by the School in different fields of specialisation are listed below. For most courses, lectures and tutorials are conducted in two blocks of 3-5 days each separated by a single week. Courses typically also include assignments, projects and examinations and one should expect to spend a total of 200 hours on a course.
