Research Collaboration on the State
In 2016 the Centre for Urbanism and Built Environment Studies (CUBES), the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI) and the NRF Chair in Local Histories and Present Realities formed the Research Collaboration on the State (RCS), a theoretically informed and empirically based seminar series with the aim to deepen the understanding of the history, institutions and spatial dimensions of the South African state. During 2017 the RCS will host a series of critical discussions and seminars on the state of the state.
The first RCS seminar took place on 24 February 2017 at the Humanities Graduate Centre at Wits University. Ivor Chipkin from PARI presented on his recent working paper entitled "The State, Capture and Revolution in Contemporary South Africa" (download here), with Claire Benit-Gbaffou and Ferial Haffajee as discussants.
