A 3-day health science educator’s course is offered four times a year. This 3-day course addresses important basic elements in teaching – an introduction to theories of teaching and learning; teaching and assessing knowledge, skills and attitudes. Participants are required to give a 5-minute lecture on a topic of their choice. A certificate of competence is awarded on successful completion of the course.
Shorter workshops of 2-3 hours each are offered on a regular basis. These are shown in the table below together with dates and times for 2018.
A one-day workshop called Teaching and Learning with Wits-e is offered on a regular basis. The workshop promotes the effective use of educational technologies, focusing on the Wits-e Learning Management System.
All teaching staff are required to undertake one teaching evaluation per annum. The Centre assists staff in this regard. The Centre can assist with lecturer, clinician (bedside) and course evaluations. Qualitative evaluations are undertaken where class sizes are less than 15 students. A workshop is offered twice a year in the development of a teaching portfolio. This is required for probation and promotion purposes. Individual assistance in this regard is provided on request.
