Adv Mohamed Shafie Ameermia

Commissioner for Social Cohesion and Nation Building in the Republic of South Africa 2020-2024
Former Commissioner on the South African Human Rights Commission 2014-2021

Adv Mohamed Shafie Ameermia is a legal consultant and the current Commissioner for Social Cohesion and Nation Building in the Republic of South Africa 2020-2024. He is also the Former Commissioner on the South African Human Rights Commission 2014-2021.

Adv Ameermia holds multiple academic qualifications, including a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Witwatersrand, Master of Laws in Human Rights and Constitutional Practice (LLM) from the University of Pretoria and a Fellowship in International Law and Arbitration from South-western Institute for International, Comparative Law and Arbitration (Dallas, USA).

As admitted Advocate of the High Court of the Republic of South Africa, Adv Ameermia served as Commissioner on the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), responsible for Access to Justice & the Right to Housing; Right to Water and Sanitation and Business and Human Rights as well as the Acting Chairperson of the SAHRC. Previously he worked for the Limpopo Provincial Government and served in various senior executive managerial capacities, advising on legal, socio economic and human rights-related matters. He also served as the Town Secretary for Makhado Municipality (Limpopo).

In November 2020, he was conferred a Citation of Appreciation Award for contributing to the historic publication of the book '160 years of Inspiration'. He was also awarded the Dean Robert G. Storey International Leadership Award by the South-western Institute for International and Comparative Law in recognition of his achievements.

Adv Ameermia serves on the Social Cohesion Advocates Forum, tasked with helping nation building and social cohesion in the Republic of South Africa
