IFRS Refresher Course
The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) are an important feature of the South African accounting landscape, but the ever-changing nature of the standards and the business world makes it difficult to keep up to date.
The IFRS Refresher Course is a 14-week advanced certificate in IFRS that takes students through the conceptual principles and latest thinking behind the requirements of the IFRS. Drilling down to the level of the individual standards, it addresses their requirements, practical application, implementation and interpretation of their output. The teaching approach makes extensive use of practical examples and case studies.
Consisting of 14 three-hour session, presented on Tuesday evenings from 17h30 to 20h30 on Wits Main Campus, the programme is ideally suited to those in the accounting profession who need to ensure their knowledge remains current. This includes:
- audit practitioners
- preparers of financial statements at middle management and chief financial officer level
- users of financial statements
Applicants need to have graduated with a financial or management accounting major, or have prior learning and workplace experience.

The Refreshers Course
if you wish to enrol for the Higher Diploma in Accountancy (HDipAcc) you will be required to pass all four units of the Bachelor of Accounting Science (BAccSc) at third year level in the same academic year. In other words you must pass Financial Accounting III, Auditing III, Taxation III and Management Accounting and Finance III in the same academic year, to be eligible for admission into the HDipAcc.
If you do not meet these criteria you will be required to write an admissions examination in the third year units of a previous academic year, but not the year immediately preceding the HDipAcc.
If a student fails Taxation III, but passes Financial Accounting III, Management Accounting and Finance III and Auditing III in year 1; in year 2 should they pass Taxation III, they will be required to write the HDipAcc admission examination for Financial Accounting III, Management Accounting and Finance III and Auditing III. The student will then be eligible for admission to the HDipAcc in Year 3.
This short course seeks to provide students who do not immediately qualify for entry into Higher Diploma in Accountancy (HDipAcc), with an opportunity to revise the syllabus of the third year BAccSc units which they would have passed in a previous academic year, so as to appropriately prepare them for the admission examination.
If a student fails Taxation III, but passes Financial Accounting III, Management Accounting and Finance III and Auditing III in year 1; in year 2 should the student pass Taxation III, and the student will be required to write the HDipAcc admission examination for Financial Accounting III, Management Accounting and Finance III and Auditing III. The student may then enrol for the refreshers course in Financial Accounting III, Auditing III and Management Accounting and Finance III to appropriately prepare for the admission test. The cost of the refreshers course for each course will then include the cost of the admission test. In addition attendance of the refreshers course is not a prerequisite for writing the admission test. Candidates are also not required to enrol for all the refreshers course units.
The aim of the short course is to ensure that where a student has not passed all four 3rd year units in the academic year immediately preceding registering for the HDipAcc that the student is appropriately prepared at a high standard for entry into the HDipAcc and is abreast of the changes in the syllabus of the unit since passing.
The course is 14 week course presented in the second semester and consists of three and half hour session per week per course, including a two hour lecture per week per unit and a one and half hour tutorial per week.
The lectures are presented Mondays to Thursdays from 17:30 to 19:30, and tutorials are presented on Saturday mornings from 8:00. Lectures and tutorials are presented on the Wits Main Campus.
