Film and Television at Wits University is incorporated into the dynamic and interdisciplinary Wits School Of Arts.
This is an exciting time to be in film and television because this dynamic department at Wits is forging relationships with the industry and working towards the upgrade and renovation of its facilities. The film and television division attracts professionals from the industry who lend their expertise in specialized areas in the teaching curriculum. This division within the WSOA is acutely aware of market needs and trends and has responded by diversifying courses such as scriptwriting to include scriptwriting for television genres. The division of Film and Television emphasizes a theoretical / practical approach to the study of Film and Television, and offers students the opportunity to engage in production projects as well as theoretical research concerning broadcast related issues, audience and reception research, and film and television studies. Students are encouraged to pursue their areas of interest and research through thorough supervision by one of the members of our staff. At both the undergraduate and postgraduate level, courses in this division enable students to approach film and television in a holistic manner that encourages students to think analytically, to question existing images critically and to become film and television makers that reflect the experiences of South Africans within the global context.

Film and Television Studies draws from many disciplines and combines well with subjects that deal with history, art and culture.
The Discipline brings together all creative arts in the WSOA: drama, scriptwriting, Fine Art, History of Art, music and film studies, offering students interesting and varied career options in production and research.

The Following programs are offered in the Division of Film and Television:

 

  • Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts (BADA)  4 year duration
  • Master of Arts in Film and Television 1-2 year duration
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Film and Television - 1-2 years
  • Certificate courses in EDITING, SINGLE CAMERA OPERATION or ENG (ELECTRONIC NEWS GATHERING) and PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT.
