Dramatic Arts

Dramatic Arts is the leading academic and professional training programme in Africa. The Division offers a comprehensive, inter-disciplinary dramatic art undergraduate degree with a range of specializations that can be further explored in our postgraduate degrees. Our Division is home to a number of prestigious individuals and projects:

  • Together with the Wits Theatre Complex, we stage more than 12 student productions with leading professional
    directors on an annual basis
  • We present a range of diverse productions at the National Arts Festival
  • We are host to a number of leading academics in drama, theatre, performance and television and film
  • We collaborate with several community initiatives that facilitate the use of drama and theatre as activism, education and therapy

  • We present in collaboration with Wits Theatre and WSOA a number of events, including the 969 Festival, Drama for Life Festival, Film Festivals, Conferences, Seminars and Workshops


In Dramatic Arts you will be offered an inter-disciplinary approach to drama/theatre/performance, and television/film/media studies and training. You will work with specialists (drama and theatre scholars, playwrights, theatre designers, performing arts managers, drama, theatre, movement and physical theatre directors and choreographers, practitioners and educators, educational drama, drama therapy and community theatre facilitators, television/film/media scholars) in a creative community alongside artistic colleagues from Music, Fine Arts and History of Art. You will explore different facets of a life in theatre, but you will also be part of a broader artistic vision.



DURATION OF COURSES


4 years (full time) for our specialist BADA (BA Dramatic Art) degree

9 months for an Honours in Drama and Film degree

12 months for a MADA (Master of Arts) degree



ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Matric with University exemption, and the required points on the Wits rating system.
  • Admission process includes an interview or audition (link to Auditions and Interview Requirements.)
  • Successful completion of Audition and Interview

DRAMATIC ARTS AND PERFORMANCE STUDIES INCLUDE

 

Courses in Drama and Film and Media Studies, Performance Studies (Acting, Voice and Movement), Movement Studies (Dance, Movement, Physical Theatre), Television Studies, Design Studies (Costume and Set Design), Theatre Directing, Applied Drama and Theatre Studies, Performing Arts Management, Theatre History, Screen and Play Writing. There are additional selections available from Fine Arts and Professional Music Studies (Basic or Advanced) and in Animation and/or Web Design.

FACILITIES INCLUDE


Wits University is exceptionally well-resourced. There are four formal theatres of various sizes and functions and two experimental theatre laboratory spaces and movement studios. Wits is the only university with a professional television production house with two TV studios and editing suites.



WHO IS RIGHT FOR DRAMATIC ARTS?


Anyone with an interest in drama, theatre, movement, design, arts management, film and television as scholars, performers, theatre-makers, directors and choreographers, production and arts managers, teachers/facilitators/academics, designers and writers. We are looking for outstanding practitioners in their chosen fields of practice, as well as theorists and critics who want to familiarise themselves with the practical aspects of the arts.



QUALIFICATIONS OFFERED

  • Undergraduate Students will receive the prestigious professional BADA Degree after the successful completion of 4 years of intensive professional, practical and academic training.
  • For BA graduates with undergraduate training in Dramatic Art or Film/TV/Media Studies, the Honours degree in Drama and Film.
  • Master of Arts degree with specializations in Theatre Directing, Performance, Applied Drama and Theatre, Film and Media
  • PhD by dissertation and or creative research
