Wits University has one of the finest performing arts facilities in the country where its students can hone their skills and where professionals can be seen regularly. The Wits Theatres are where our society can be mirrored and young minds challenged. The Wits Theatre is a service organisation within the University, providing support for the mounting of these productions, and aspects of technical teaching and practical training for both the disciplines of Dramatic Art and Music. It handles the day to day running of the Wits Theatre complex and Great Hall and while the University community have first call on the facilities, it also caters for a large, diverse collection of professional companies, dance studios and schools.

Gitanjali Pather, Director of The Wits Theatre
The University of Witwatersrand is pleased to announce the appointment of well known theatre personality Gitanjali Pather as the new Director of the Wits Theatre. Ms Pather has a distinguished career spanning the professional performing arts, education, television, advertising and marketing arenas. She has accumulated 28 years’ consummate experience in both the creative and executive fields, having served in a number of major performing arts institutions in SA including Head of Education and Development, Director of Operations and Acting CEO of The Playhouse Company, Chief Operating Officer of the Market Theatre and General Manager of the Windybrow Centre for the Arts. Over the years, Ms Pather has conceptualised and produced hundreds of theatrical productions, big events, concerts and festivals in SA and abroad. Gita, created the first South African Women's Arts Festivals now in its 17th year in Durban and JHB, the first Arts Administration training programmes and helped establish the Transnet Travelling theatre trucks in 1994.
