Curricula
WAM’s collections are integrated into many teaching programs within the University including curricula of the Art History, Fine Arts and Arts Education departments. A program in Heritage and Museum studies offered within the Wits School of the Arts, also draws on the resources of the Museum.
The Martienssen Prize and Exhibition
Named after the founding Professor of Fine Arts at Wits University, this prestigious annual exhibition of the work of senior students in the Fine Arts Department is an eagerly anticipated showcase of upcoming talent.
For many years, this exhibition was presented at the Gertrude Posel Gallery. With the opening of the new museum, the exhibition will once again be hosted at WAM.
The work is adjudicated by a panel of judges selected by both staff and students of the Fine Arts Department.

The Robert Hodgins Prize is awarded annually to a third year Fine Arts student, as selected by his/her fellow third year Fine Arts students. Hodgins did not specify the criteria to be used in awarding the prize, preferring the criteria to be established by each group as part of a democratic process of selecting a recipient. Hodgins felt that the students would know each other well enough by third year to be able to make an informed choice. As BA Fine Arts is a four year degree, they would have a year after selecting to assess the validity of their choice.
Previous recipients of the prize:
- 2007 Portia Malatjie
- 2008 Serge Nitegeka
- 2009 Ansie Greyling
- 2010 Shannon Ferguson
- 2011 Faith Jarvis
