Afrocartography: Traces of Places and all points in between is a rich and fresh choreopoem which explores a way of being in the world that can only be described as Afropolitan.  Afrocartography is a journey into a fantastical world through heightened spoken text, sound and song, stylized movement and visual design elements that speak of travel, ritual, always belonging and never belonging.  As the title suggests, this choreopoem speaks to cartography, personal memory, the evocation of the ancestral and of a realm of existence where dreaming, waking, memory and imagination overlap. Afrocartography takes a close and poetic look at some of the contradicting tensions of hybrid cultural identity and ‘global citizenship’. The work can be described as a story of migratory proportions. The narrative follows The Traveler, The Mapmaker, The Afrosettler and The Afropolitan forging new paths and revisiting engrained routes as they conjure mythic and metaphoric worlds full of hope, contradiction, baggage, hurt, mystery and curiosity.
