Varsity Cup Monday night mania to resume again only in 2015
Wits Univ’s 1st rugby VX's second year in top-flight inter-varsity competition ended after a tough 2014 Varsity Cup campaign. Ahead now lies a lot of hard work to prepare for the 2015 season. This year Wits also fielded sides in the Steinhoff Koshuis Championship (our representative team was Steinhoff Commerce), and in the Young Guns under-20 competitions. For the remainder of 2014, the action now shifts to the Golden Lions Rugby Union's Pirates Grand Challenge leagues, and the Steinhoff (Wits) internal league.
The 2014 USSA's took place at Rhodes Univ in Grahamstown. In the first game on Mon 30 June Wits lost 15-52 to a very strong UJ team who quickly established themselves as favourites to win the competition. Scorers for Wits were Joshua Jarvis (try), Richard Crossman (try) and Michael Sephton-Poultney (1 x conversion, 1 x penalty). Outstanding players for Wits were Thato Mavundla (captain), Conor Brockschmidt, Josh Jarvis and Gideon Muller.
Wednesday's match against UOFS Shimlas was, according to most spectators, the best game of the tournament thus far and the Witsies put in a massive effort to tie the match 24-24 at full time before conceding three tries in extra time to lose 24-43. Outstanding contributions were made by Thato Mavundla, Brent Crossley, Josh Jarvis, Ish Nkolo, Luvoyo Pupuma and Ameer Williams.
The final match against NMMU on Friday 4 July was a tough encounter after two hard matches earlier in the week. Wits' Captain Courageous Thato Mavundla had to be replaced due to an ankle injury midway through the first half but the Witsies showed their resilience after trailing 3 - 19 at halftime and pushed NMMU all the way before going down 22 - 26. Scorers for Wits: Brent Crossley (try), James Marx (try), Ish Nkolo (try), Dandre Van Den Berg (2 x conversions, 1 x penalty). Conor Brockschmidt, Brent Crossley, Gideon Muller and Ish Nkolo were the standout players for Wits.
