VARSITY SHIELD 2015
Monday night Varsity rugby mania resumed in February 2015 when Wits Univ’s 1st rugby VX's began it's first year in the 2nd-tier Varsity Shield competition, after relegation from the Varsity Cup at the end of the 2014 season. We came desperately close to winning the Varsity Shield in 2015.
top-flight inter-varsity competition ended after a tough 2014 Varsity Cup campaign.
Here's how Wits' 2015 Varsity Shield campaign went:
Ahead now lies a lot of hard work to reclaim our place in the Cup competition in 2017.
Wits also fielded sides in the Steinhoff Koshuis Championship (our representative team was Steinhoff Commerce) and entered its Young Guns side in the u-20 competition. We also contested the Golden Lions Rugby Union's Pirates Grand Challenge leagues, and our faculty and 'koshuis' teams battled it out all season long in the the Steinhoff (Wits) internal league (more below).
The 2014 USSA's took place at Rhodes Univ in Grahamstown. In the first game on Mon 30 June Wits lost 15-52 to a very strong UJ team who quickly established themselves as favourites to win the competition. Scorers for Wits were Joshua Jarvis (try), Richard Crossman (try) and Michael Sephton-Poultney (1 x conversion, 1 x penalty). Outstanding players for Wits were Thato Mavundla (captain), Conor Brockschmidt, Josh Jarvis and Gideon Muller.
Wednesday's match against UOFS Shimlas was, according to most spectators, the best game of the tournament thus far and the Witsies put in a massive effort to tie the match 24-24 at full time before conceding three tries in extra time to lose 24-43. Outstanding contributions were made by Thato Mavundla, Brent Crossley, Josh Jarvis, Ish Nkolo, Luvoyo Pupuma and Ameer Williams.
The final match against NMMU on Friday 4 July was a tough encounter after two hard matches earlier in the week. Wits' Captain Courageous Thato Mavundla had to be replaced due to an ankle injury midway through the first half but the Witsies showed their resilience after trailing 3 - 19 at halftime and pushed NMMU all the way before going down 22 - 26. Scorers for Wits: Brent Crossley (try), James Marx (try), Ish Nkolo (try), Dandre Van Den Berg (2 x conversions, 1 x penalty). Conor Brockschmidt, Brent Crossley, Gideon Muller and Ish Nkolo were the standout players for Wits.
