The Wits Wargames Club (WWC) is responsible for the promotion of mind sports and electronic sports at the University and the whole of South Africa. The club is affiliated to Mind Sports South Africa. WWC, under the guidance of Wits Sport, offers opportunities to students with skill and aptitude in a number of sporting codes such as Morabaraba (traditional African board game), draught, Computer games (FIFA, Call of Duty, Counter Strike etc) and historical figure games.
Furthermore the club assist students in competing at both provincial and national tournaments, both online and in person and if chosen the individual will represent South Africa internationally.
Over the years the club has produced South African team representatives such as Ryan van den Bergh and David Vannucci. The club has also produced Collin Webster, who is the President of the Mind Sport South Africa (MSSA). In 2011, WWC member Masilo Klaas Mokgomole managed to win three Provincial tournaments and was elected to the South African Morabaraba team trials.
Masilo also won the Wits University 2011 SDLU’s Most Outstanding Leader in Sport award because of his involvement in sport. In October 2011, club member Ian Pillay was one of the two South Africans who competed at 2011 IeSF World Championship in South Korea. Pillay took part in the FIFA online competitions. Simon Modise also represented the club at the MSSA nationals in December 2011 and got a bronze medal for FIFA.
In partnership with Wits Sport and generously sponsored by the centre of Telecommunications Access and Services, School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the server (Dell PowerEdge SC1420) enables us to pursue many sports initiative for the future. The server with a 1Gbps national connection, and 32Mbps International connection, hosted within the Central Networking Services (CNS) University server room, allows club members to host games, ensuring delay free gaming and providing a service to all students.
