2012 proved to be one of the most successful ever for table tennis at Wits. Our men's A team aced the 2012 USSA table tennis championships held at the National Institute for Higher Education (NIHE) in Kimberley from 2-7 Dec, beating UJ in the final. Not only that: Evans Motaung (pictured right) ended up men's singles' champion and was selected for inclusion in the national students' side, with the possibility of competing in the World Student Games in Kazan, Russia in July. Other achievers at the 'USSAs' were Bhavik Patel, Hlumelo Rubushe and Themba Mkhize.
In 2013, the Wits Table Tennis Club (WTTC) renews its affiliation to the Gauteng Central Table Tennis Association (GCTTA) and University Sports South Africa (USSA). We have two teams registered in the GCTTA league (one in the Premier and the other in the second league).
Every year WTTC hosts three tournaments: one in the first semester and the other two in the second semester. The club also stages the annual Oteng Tlapeng Memorial Cup on 20 August 2011. Dr Oteng “Zah” Tlapeng, a WTTC pioneer and the club’s founder, died in a tragic car accident in mid-2010. Previous Memorial tournaments have attracted players from Botswana, Limpopo, Mafikeng, Nelspruit, Potchefstroom, Vaal, Gauteng and the occasional international guest entrant. Former Witsie Mlu Mabendla is the current coach. Wits A Team (right above) USSA 2012 winners Men's single's champ, Evans Motaung
The WTTC trains 3 times a week at the New Squash Complex (West Campus) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 17h00 – 20h00. New and seasoned players are welcome to participate. So join today and be part of a great team.
