Gymnastics Club

During O-Week many of the students feel somewhat intimidated by the gymnastics club and
the common statements we hear are “I’m not flexible” or “I can’t do all those scary flips and stuff”.

Well... come to our club to learn how to do crazy flips, or at least to touch your toes without
squirming in pain! Our coach is excellent and he trains each individual according to their
own ability and fitness. So... you have nothing to be afraid of! Guys can join! This is not just
a sport for ladies. We have many new gymnasts each year who have never done gymnastics
in their lives, but they do exceptionally well in training and competitions.

In 2011, the club competed at the USSA National championships held at Tshwane University
of Technology.  As usual, our Wits gymnasts have come home from the tournament in
Pretoria with great results! Mukhtar Nagdee, a new gymnast, achieved a bronze medal for
MAG Level 1 and Richard Dobson, a reserve gymnast for the South African team, achieved
a gold medal for MAG Level 6 and a bronze medal for mini trampoline Elite Level. Richard
also took part in the National Gymnastics Championships, which were held at the Bellville
Vellodrome, and he was placed fourth overall with apparatus, and gold medals for rings
and the floor exercise. These outstanding results have been achieved through the hard
work and dedication of the students and the dedication and expertise of our coach,
Mike Szabo.

We usually train 2-3 times a week for an hour and a half in the mornings.
Join the gymnastics club for fun, fitness and flexibility!
