The beginning of 2011 saw our much anticipated season of Volleyball
start off on a rough note, as we were still searching for a coach and we
had no equipment to train or play with. As the days went by a reputable
coach with years of experience was welcomed into the family and we
eventually acquired our training equipment. Ever since then Wits
Volleyball has improved and developed into a dynamic club that is
overwhelmed with passion for the game. Our players range from
new, inexperienced students to well-seasoned veterans, each of
whom has contributed to the unique diversity of the club.
The Wits Volleyball Students’ team had embarked on a journey to the 2011 USSA Volleyball Tournament
in Cape Town which was held from the 4th-8th of July. With weeks of immense training, dedication and commitment from both the players and the coaching team- both teams were ranked in the top 10 out
of 23 institutions.
The Ladies’ team finished 9th while the Men’s team was placed 10th. After an action-packed week of volleyball at the USSAs in Cape Town, the team arrived home on the 9th and made immediate plans to journey down to Durban two days later to participate at the annual VSA (Volleyball South Africa) tournament that was held from the 12th to 15th of July.
With a sudden change of date of the tournament and financial complications, the trip to Durban seemed impossible. However, the veterans of our club came to our rescue and assisted us in making another life-changing experience attainable. The ladies’ and men’s team excelled in Durban by finishing 5th and 8th respectively.
Apart from the two very successful trips that our club experienced this year, our Gauteng league results were a huge improvement from last year, which saw the Ladies finish the season in 6th place while the Men were in 8th place. Our greatest achievement that stunned our league this year was when both teams put up a remarkable fight against one of the best teams in the League- Quantum. The ladies annihilated their opposition 3-2, while the men lost in a nail-biting last set 2-3.
Our players and coach’s hard work and commitment did not go unnoticed as our coach and three players were selected to represent Gauteng at the 2011 National Championships that took place from the 5th-8th of October in Bloemfontein. Our Coach, A. Kasamba, coached the men’s senior team which our Wits player, Zweli Ngwenya was a part of, that took silver at the tournament. Palesa Molata and Tumi Legoete received bronze medals for representing the Gauteng Youth teams.
Our path seemed slow and rocky at the start but with a true team effort and commitment from each and every player, Wits Volleyball was able to soar to great heights this year. We will continue to work hard and play even harder in 2012.
Our Training days are Mondays and Wednesdays 17:30 - 20:00, socials are on a Friday 18:00-late, and league games are played on certain Saturdays throughout the season. Join us if you are interested in playing the game for fun- socially or if you would like to play competitively. Beach Volleyball is also played occasionally.
