Report on 2014 USSA tournament
It was down to NMMU in Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth) for the 2014 USSA's. Our girls had a tough task on their hands: to reclaim our place in the upper echelons of inter-varsity netball, after last year's rude awakening. Wits participated in the B section which consisted of 10 teams that were divided into 2 pools, pool B1 and pool B. Wits participated in pool B1, against Tshwane University of Technology (2), University of Kwazulu Natal, University of Limpopo (Turfloop) as well as Walter Sisulu University (Ibika). After a slow start, losing our first match against TUT 2 the team worked hard and went on to beat UKZN and WSU-Ibika. After stiff competition in our pool, both Wits and TUT ended up with 2 wins and 2 loses.
A goal average system was then implemented and Wits ended up second behind the unbeaten UL-Turfloop. The top 4 teams (first 2 teams from pool B1 and first two teams from pool B2) went on to battle it out for the top 4 positions. The top 4 positions included the University of Namibia, which is not a USSA affiliate. Wits went on to beat NWU-Mafikeng and ended up 3rd, with the UL-Turfloop being 2nd and the UniNam 1st. UNW Mafikeng then took bronze, Wits took silver, with the UL-Turfloop taking gold.
Competition in section B was very strong, with the style of play being different from that of section A. Section B teams play a very unstructured netball of just a catch, pass and run and that made it difficult for the girls to adapt. All the teams prepared quite well as there was never an easy game, for example, the position 2 and 3 from last year ended up 6th and 7th respectively.
Unfortunately, Wits' GA Tamsyn Lee-Donelly tore her knee ligaments on the 3rd day of the competition and had to be sent home for further treatment and surgery. This incident left the team with only 9 players, ie only 2 reserves. All our matches were played early morning 8:00, meaning that players had to wake up early for breakfast at 6:00, and due to a limited transportation system, after matches the team had to either wait at the courts for 3 to 4 hours to watch the opposition, or go back to the hotel to rest and miss watching some important matches. Due to limited transportation to and from the court players recovery after matches, ie ice baths, swimming pool recovery etc was affected
The team's performance during the last two days, however, was magnificent, and congratulations go to Busi Madikane who moved from WA to GA position and went on to display a consistently brilliant performance after Tamsyn’s injury. The team stuck together and team spirit was very high. Lorraine Masibi, who later took the role of the team manager, fitted in very well with the team and played a major role as the ‘mother’ of the team. Lorraine and the captain, Ofentse worked very well together and that made our team to stay focused and my job as a coach to be very smooth, thank you to their hard work and dedication
Netball steps up a gear
Determined to reach new heights in inter-varsity competition, Wits Netball last year signed on a new coach, Martha Mosoahle. Coach Mosoahle has an excellent pedigree, and presently coaches the national u-21 squad. Wits' representative students' sides now also join other Gauteng tertiary institutions in the expanded Gauteng university competition (previously the "Quad" series contested by UJ, UP-Tuks, TUT and UNW-Pukke).
In 2014 Wits will have two sides doing duty in the Gauteng East Netball League (GENA). Fixtures are played in Atlasville, Kempton Park High School on Wednesday nights. The teams practice at the Dig Field courts every Monday and Wednesday evening.
The 2014 edition of the Wits Internal Netball League (WINL) features 12 teams:Reith, Braam Centre, Esselen, Barnato, Medhurst, Sunnyside, Noswall Hall, Junction, Jubilee and David Webster. Medics beat Girton. Medics claimed top spot in the 2013 WINL competition. Games are scheduled from 18h00 every Tuesday during the season.
