The Wits Boxing Club nicknamed "The Stable", is open to all Wits students & staff members (males & females).
The club allows Witsies to try boxing for physical fitness/fun or for competition. Affiliated with JABO and US SA
Boxing, the club's competitive boxers participate in tournaments around Johannesburg and compete against
other universities in the USSA Championships each year.
The Wits Boxing Club is one club with a sterling reputation within the Wits Sports and USSA circles. In 2011, The Wits Boxing Club hosted other universities in the 2011 USSA Championship. Wits Boxing Club scooped overall 1st position (out of 7 universities) in the tournament, bringing home 7 gold medals and the Best Team trophy. Witsie Khayelihle Maseko was awarded the best male boxer trophy and also Hedda Wolmarans was the best female boxer for the tournament. Our coach Winston Nxumalo, got the best coach award.
On 27 August 2011, the club successfully hosted the JABO tournament with 6 fights in total. Monwabisi Botha received a silver medal in the 54kg division.
Botha’s bout was named the best of the tournament. Also, the club’s Khayelihle Maseko won a gold medal in 64kg division. He was named the Best Boxer of the tournament.
On 9 October, the club was instrumental in the hosting of the Supersport Boxing Bonanza, a professional boxing spectacular that featured a national middle weight title fight. Five fights were broadcasted live on Supersport (SS5).
