Mountain Club 2012For the mountain club, climbing is not just a sport. It’s a lifestyle. A large part of the club is about getting together and having a great time, whether that is meeting up for a braai at our clubroom, or spending the weekend camping. It’s about sharing our love for the outdoors and our magnificent country.

Having said that, we still climb whatever we can find – cliffs, crags, boulders, buildings and on occasion, even trees. Every climber is attracted to something different in the sport – the thrill of climbing high, overcoming personal obstacles, working particular problems or the excitement of exploring new routes. No matter the climb, there is always a massive adrenaline surge during and after and a real sense of achievement on finishing a route.

Despite the fact that climbing is an extreme sport, and by nature dangerous, we always climb as safely as possible. We teach all the necessary skills and provide most of the equipment.

The club participates every year in the inter-varsity competition (USSA). This competition provides a platform for climbers all over the country to meet and test their skills. It is a great opportunity to interact with other climbers and learn from those more experienced. Unfortunately, the club did not perform too well in USSA this year. However, Sharifa Modise managed to place in the finals for the women’s lead and bouldering competitions. Our goal for next year is to train harder and improve the overall performance of the club.

You can find our clubroom underneath the Flower Hall on West Campus. Inside we have a bouldering cave on which we train. The cave has several walls at different inclines, providing challenging routes for beginners’ right through to professional climbers. We also have a climbing wall in the Old Mutual Sports Hall.We generally train in the mornings, and also whenever the club is open. A few club members also train at the wall at St Peter’s on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

If you wish to join the club, or have further enquiries, please don’t hesitate to contact Luke Worster on 071 506 7713.
