Wits Orienteering Club - April 2012

The 2012 sprint season has been very successful for Wits Orienteering Club. With just 2 events remaining, Michael Crone is on top of the Gauteng men's log. He has a significant lead and looks certain to retain the Sprint title. Anthony Stott is currently in 7th place. Oscar Tshitshi - one of the new members - is showing great commitment and is currently sitting in 22nd place out of 63 men.
The women's log is much closer near the top which will make the last 2 Sprint events very exciting. Currently Sarah Pope, Wits Orienteering Chairperson , is leading, with Stephanie Courtnage in 3rd place. Jessica Hemer is in 11th place. Caitlin Stewart, another new member, is doing brilliantly. She's currently in 19th position.
The cross country season started on Sunday. It was a tough event out in Roodepoort. It was long, rocky and hot but our new members handled it very well. Gina Gibson was 5th on the 3km course followed by Jonathan Barker in 6th and Caitlin Stewart in 12th. On the long
(8km) course, Sarah Pope was the first lady home. Anthony Stott and Jessica Hemer also competed.
Wits Orieteering Club in partnership with HSBC are raising funds for the teams trip to their World Championships. The senior championships will be in Switzerland where our very own Michael Crone will be representing Wits. The junior championships will be in Slovakia. The month of July will be a nerve racking one for our orieteers and we would like to wish our teams all the best!!!
