

Why study German?
German is the largest language group in the European Union and Germany is the leading economy in Europe.There are numerous Germn, Austrian and Swiss firms operating in South Africa, employing a significant number of South Africans. In addition to the well-known firms and brand names, ther are a number of NGOs and foundations activer in South Africa. A knowledge of German is certainly an advantage when applying for a job and becomes essential when ones climbs the corporate ladder and enables one to take full advantage of training programmes in Germany. German Studies also houses the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Information Centre and provides information and support to students wishing to take advantage of funded opportunities for postgraduate study at a German university.German combines well with all other courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences e.g Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, History, International Relations, Music, Art History, Drama an d Film and is an excellent elective for Science, Law and Commerce students.there are numerous career paths to consider: Translation, the diplomatic corps, tourism, journalism and many more. All undergraduate courses from Basic German to 3rd year are designed to provide competence in contemporary Germanan and a critical appreciation of the literature, thought, history and civilsation the German speaking countries (Germany, Austria znd Switzerland).The postgraduate degrees BA Honours and MA by coursework and Research Report or Dissertation and PhD are also offered.

German Studies staff are active in research: Prof. Kathleen Thorpe: Contemporary Austrian and German prose, narratology and literary translation, Austrian Studies, Gender Studies and Women's Writing, European Literature, Transnationalism and Multiculturalism. Prof. Anette Horn: Cosmopolitanism and Globalisation (18th century), Jean Paul, R.M. Lenz, Nietzsche, GDR-literature, Musil, Kleist and Feminism.
