UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

Bachelor of Science (BSc)

The BSc programme is flexible and it provides students with an opportunity to structure or 'design' their own curriculum. Units may run for a year or for only part of a year. Every unit has a points value and a certain number of points are needed in order to complete the programme. You are encouraged to seek advice on how to plan your curriculum. Staff in the Faculty of Science are available throughout the year for this purpose.

During enrolment, successful applicants will be given a Rules and Syllabus Booklet which explains the rules in detail, as well as a timetable showing all the units offered. However, the information which follows is designed to introduce you to the curriculum and help you with preliminary planning.

Restricted units
Certain units are restricted or have limited intake. Those are marked on the list. Please take note of them and plan an alternative choice because your acceptance into the BSc programme does not necessarily guarantee admission into those units.

Points
The BSc programme is based on a point system. Each unit carries a number of points, defined both by level and duration. You are required to complete a minimum number of science units, based on the point value, particularly at second and third year level. You may therefore find it useful to plan your programme based on your chosen unit sets (majors).
