UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

Programmes offered in Humanities

Bachelor of Arts (BA)

The Bachelor of Arts is a three year programme studied on a full - time basis where you get to choose the subjects you want to study. There is a great deal of diversity in the units we offer and our system allows students to choose freely from these.

In choosing your units:

  • Think of your intellectual aims and interests.
  • Aim for focus and consistency by thinking of how the subject material will relate to your primary interests and preferences.
  • For some specific career paths, you can equip yourself more fully after your Bachelor of Arts by registering for further studies with a specific vocational or professional training focus - you would then become a postgraduate student.
  • Select units that will provide you with a solid foundation in your areas of interest. For example, if you are interested in heritage and museum work, subjects like Archaeology, History, History of Art and Anthropology would be useful. If you want a career in development work, you should choose units such as Political Studies, Anthropology and Sociology.

A BA is made up of two major subjects (unit sets) and 16 additional units. A unit set or a major is a subject that you take from first year through to third year. This means you study the same subject in first year, second year and third year. Each year you study different aspects of that subject and the degree of difficulty and complexity increases as you become more specialised in that subject.

A unit* is a course that runs for a term (one half of the academic year), either from February to June or July to November. For each unit you will submit essays or assignments and write tests. The unit will be examined at the end of the term.

For the BA three - year curriculum, it is normal to take eight units in first year, eight units in second year and eight units in third year.

*Units are offered at Level 1, 2 and Level 3.
