Selection Tests

All applicants to the Faculty of Health Sciences are required to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBT). (Please see below for further information). Other faculties will also have a limited range of selection tests.

Science Selection Tests

Applicants who do not meet the likely acceptance level requirements will be required to write a selection test. Depending on the outcome of the test, you may be waitlisted for the 3-year programme or placed on the 4-year extended programme. Applicants are not expected to undertake any special preparation for the tests.
The tests will assess:

• science aptitude (incorporating scientific reasoning and problem solving skills)
• spatial ability
• physical science (including fundamental concepts in physics and chemistry)
• mathematical ability and
• logical sequencing skills.

A brief biographical questionnaire will also be completed.
Selection will be done on the basis of the test results and other admission criteria. Students will be notified within 5 working days from the date of the test of a decision.

your identity document
your person (application / student) number

Health Sciences Selection Test/s

All applicants to the Faculty of Health Sciences (EXCEPT applicants who are applying for admission into the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) ONLY) are required to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBT) before being considered for admission.

Applicants applying to the GEMP and one or more of the other programmes in the Faculty of Health Sciences, need to write the NBT.

Please read the following information carefully and ensure that you are familiar with the process you need to follow:

National Benchmark Test (NBT)

The tests were designed to measure students’ levels of proficiency in Academic Literacy, Quantitative Literacy and Mathematics. There are two tests of three hours each. The first test is the Academic and Quantitative Literacy test (AQL) which is written by ALL applicants for all programmes in Health Sciences. The second test is the Mathematics (MAT) test. This is to be written by all applicants doing or who have done Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy).

PLEASE NOTE:

Both the AQL and MAT components MUST be written on the same day.

Wits will ONLY accept first attempt results for selection purposes.

All applicants need to have written the test by 19 August 2012.

COST OF THE TESTS

The cost to write the NBT for the 2013 intake cycle is:

• AQL only -  R100
• AQL and MAT - R175

These costs include processing and administration fees. Candidates who do not report for their registered test must register again and pay a second time in order to reschedule the missed test.

HOW DO I REGISTER TO WRITE?

You may register on line OR by cellphone. We recommend that you register on line.
To register on line you have to access the website www.nbt.ac.za . Read the instructions; then click on Register to Write. Your acknowledgement and EasyPay barcode will be available for you to download immediately after you click on submit. You can take this downloaded letter to any EasyPay paypoint near you to pay the testing fee. The EasyPay paypoints are listed on the EasyPay website and on the letter. The EasyPay website is: www.easypay.co.za .

On your cellphone, access the website www.nbt.ac.za/mobile and follow the prompts. This facility is used in exactly the same way as you would with ‘mxit’, ‘facebook’, etc. To access your acknowledgement/EasyPay letter you may: (1) enter your email address and the acknowledgement letter will be sent automatically; or (2) log onto the NBT website and print the acknowledgement letter;
OR (3) enter your cellphone number and you will receive only your EasyPay number (not the full letter). Most EasyPay paypoints will accept the number only, but there are some that accept only the full letter.

TEST DATES AND TIMES FOR 2012 *

16 July 2011 - 7:30 NB (closing date for registration is 26 June 2011), OR
30 July 2011 - 7:30 NB (closing date for registration is 10 July 2011)
(A short break is taken between the AQL and MAT test)

PLEASE BRING THE FOLLOWING WITH YOU ON THE DAY OF THE TEST

• Your ID Book together with a photocopy of your ID. The venue administrator will keep the copy of your ID.
• Your receipt as proof that you have paid the testing fee. The venue administrator will stamp the receipt and hand it back to you.
• An HB pencil and a black ballpoint pen (not a fibre tipped pen)
• An eraser
• A pencil sharpener
• Something to eat/drink.
• Bus/Taxi fare home, if required.

PLEASE NOTE:

• Candidates who have not registered and paid for the tests WILL NOT be allowed to write the tests.
• You need only write the tests once, even if you have applied to more than one university. All universities to which you apply will be able to access your test results.

GEMP APPLICANTS ONLY
- WITS ADDITIONAL PLACEMENT TEST (WAPT) (15 AUGUST 2012)**

In addition to the NBT, eligible applicants will be invited to particpate in the WAPT (Wits Additional Placement Test). Click here for further information.

ONLY those applicants who have been shortlisted, based on their Composite Index, will be invited to write this test. Preparation is essential and so you are urged to visit the website www.wits.ac.za/health  in order to acquaint yourself with the competencies required to prepare for the test. The competencies that will be assessed include Anatomy, Molecular Medicine and Physiology.

• No applicant may request a test, eligibility is determined on the basis of your Composite Index calculated according to performance in the Biographical Questionnaire and degree studies (see booklet Selection and Criteria 2012 for 2013 for further details).
• No decisions can be made until all documentation such as academic transcripts (or an interim transcript of results) and the biographical questionnaire have been submitted.
• The WAPT test has been scheduled to take place on the designated date ONLY. No alternative arrangements can be made. This test will be administered by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
