UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG

Information for Recruiters

Graduate Recruitment Programme (GRP) 2011

Information on Graduate Recruitment Programmes and the University Student Employment Office

Important Information for Recruiters:

1. Graduate Recruitment Portal

Progress on the implementation of the student recruitment portal has been delayed.  However, the Unit continues to pursue the matter and will inform companies accordingly as soon as the system is in place.  The Unit is committed to implementing a portal, however, further consultation within the University is necessary.

2.  Student Privacy and release of student contact details:

  •
    • The Unit has in the past made available student postal address information and sent sms’s to students in broad categories (courses and degrees) via information taken from the University’s student database. The Unit, in line with University policy and privacy legislation, are no longer able to make student contact details available or to send mass sms’s without student consent.
    • The Unit has, however, implemented a registration system whereby students are invited to register for the Graduate Recruitment Programme and related events.  Postal addresses of students who register for the GRP will be available to recruiters and the Unit will be in a position to send sms’s to these students only.
    • While it is possible that not all eligible students will register for the GRP, it is anticipated that those students who are interested in exploring employment options will register. This will have the benefit of allowing recruiters to hone in on the available students as opposed to students that are already contracted to bursaries or interested in pursuing post-graduate study programmes.
    • Recruiters will still be able to advertise in the GRP Booklet and display posters on campus through the GRP Office to reach those students who have not registered for the GRP.

 3.       Company Registration:

All participating companies in the Graduate Recruitment Programme are expected to complete a registration form. The form serves as a record of the services that a recruiting company requests, company contact details and a description of the company as a desirable employer. This information will be used in the Graduate Recruitment Programme booklet that is distributed to all final year students. It is also important that companies inform the GRP Office as early as possible of any changes to these details. Please note that the registration form needs to be typed out and emailed back to the GRP office.

 4.       Company Expectations:

It has in the past been the experience of the Unit that recruiters expect large turnouts at all presentations. The Unit acknowledges that student culture and behaviour in respect of recruitment and preparation for the world of work differs from campus to campus and every effort is made to develop students for the world of work and the job search process. However, student participation in the Graduate Recruitment Programme and related events is voluntary. In some instances, where the student is studying a “high demand” programme of study, students often have numerous offers for employment and sometimes they may already be contracted to companies through bursaries. This is particularly the case in fields such as accounting, engineering and the mathematical sciences. Recruiters are urged to take cognisance of this reality and to adjust their expectations accordingly. If necessary, please arrange to discuss this situation with the GRP Office.

5.       Career Fairs:

  1.
    1. The Unit will host 4 career fairs this year.  A career fair is a fun and informative day for both recruiters and students. This day is marketed to students via posters on campus, media, Wits Clips, Intranet, student newspaper, leaflets as well as a general email and sms’s to all final year students and registered GRP students. Should a company wish to enhance their visibility, they are welcome to provide the Unit with posters that can be displayed on campus. Ten (10) posters are usually sufficient for this purpose.
    2. Please refer to information in the price list below on starting and finishing times for the Careers Fairs.
    3. Career Fairs are marketed to all students and post grads.

6.       Presentations:

  1.
    1. Presentations are generally marketed in the Graduate Recruitment Programme through the GRP Booklet, distributed to all final year classes. In addition the presentations are listed on the CCDU website.  Recruiters are urged to provide the Unit with posters to market the presentation. If requested, an sms can be sent to students that have registered for the GRP.
    2. If a company schedules a presentation early (i.e. before the scheduled GRP period), the presentation will not be listed in the booklet.  However, the company’s contact details will still be listed on the website and in the booklet.
    3. Presentations are generally scheduled during the student lunch-time, 13h25-14h10, as well as after lectures from 17h00, venue dependant. Access to the venue can only be obtained during these periods.  Please note that the University lunch-time has been reduced to 45 minutes.
    4. While the Unit does it’s best to ensure that the venue is booked and the necessary audio-visual assistance is arranged, logistics do sometimes cause delays. This, however, is a rare occurrence.
    5. The audio-visual equipment that the Unit is able to supply includes:  data projector, screen and sound. The Unit does not supply any laptop computers.  A technician is also available to assist.
    6. Late registrations (dates that fall outside of the GRP period) are discouraged as this usually takes the presentation close to the exam period. Student attendance usually drops significantly at this time.
    7. Companies are urged to observe the closing date for registration for the programme.

7.        On Campus Interviews:

  1.
    1. The Unit can make available two rooms for one-on-one interviews.  If additional rooms are requested, appropriate arrangements will have to be made with the GRP Office and will depend on availability.
    2. Access to the interview venues is available from 08h45. Interviewers, however, should arrive at least 15 minutes before their interview schedules for an orientation. Interviewers will have access to tea/coffee and a light lunch.

8.       Recruitment Agencies:

In keeping with the Unit’s policy to deal directly with employers, the Counselling and Careers Development Unit will no longer take bookings or release student contact details to recruitment agencies.  Should an agency be acting on behalf of a company, the agency will be required to provide proof that they have been appointed by the employing company.  In such instances the student contact information will only be released directly to the employing company.

 9.       GRP Employed Graduates:

Companies are requested to submit a list of all Wits graduates employed through the GRP office once offers have been signed to: grp.ccdu@wits.ac.za

10.   Evaluation Forms:

In trying to keep up with service excellence and ensuring that the careers centre continues to keep up with recruitment requirements, companies are urged to complete an evaluation form after participating in any of the GRP events.

RECRUITMENT OF STUDENTS FOR PART-TIME/CASUAL EMPLOYMENT

USE (University Student Employment) is a service run on campus that facilitates the placement of students in part-time/casual employment.  For many students, working part time is not an option but a necessity. Part time/casual employment opportunities play a major role in providing students with constructive development of skills for the workplace so that they may be able to contribute more meaningfully when they graduate.

Jobs advertised through the USE Office are as varied as the students themselves. They have been employed as drivers, shop assistants, couriers, tutors, baby-sitters, researchers, waitrons, cashiers, house sitters, promoters, receptionists, stock takers, barmen, models and designers, tutors, managers, etc.

For further information regarding the above programmes contact the CCDU Reception at 011-717-9140/32

RECRUITMENT OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

As a University we are committed to working towards the goal of creating an accessible and welcoming environment for students who have disabilities.  Accessibility also means access to opportunities for employment.

The Disability Unit has contact with a number of registered students who have a varying range of disabilities.  Recruiting companies are encouraged to contact the Disability Unit for information on students who are available for employment.  The contact details for the Disability Unit are:

            Tel:      27(11)717-9152

POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS

Wits produces highly adaptable individuals who are equipped with a deeper understanding of fields such as Engineering, Science, Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, Medicine, Commerce, Humanities and the  Built Environment.  These students are often able to make contributions to organisations through their capacity to combine knowledge gained through their studies with past experience.

Post-graduate students are often keen to engage in research and internship opportunities in organisations that can provide mutual benefit for the student and the organisation.

Recruiters are requested to contact the CCDU to explore opportunities with regard to employing post-graduate students.
