Description of Residences

The University of the Witwatersrand recognizes that living within a residence hall environment can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a student s career. Faculty/student interaction in a residence, developing competence in all aspect of leadership, shaping a community from a cross-cultural perspective, late night discussions with colleagues - these are just a few of the many opportunities that residence life provides, apart from sporting and social activities..

The 21 residences vary in size and layout, but here are the main lifestyle options:

In catering residences, meals are provided as part of the residence package. In self-catering accommodation, no meals are provided, but the residence provides catering facilities, including stoves and fridges.

The residences are divided into five clusters, namely:

The East Campus Cluster (located on the original Wits campus at Milner Park)

The West Campus Cluster (located on the former Wits Agricultural Society Showgrounds)

The Braamfontein Cluster (located in Br mfontein and Hillbrow)

The Highfield Cluster (located on the former JCE campus in Parktown)

The Parktown Cluster (located near the Medical School, Business School and Education Campus)

Residences are linked to all campuses by means of a free bus service between 07:00 and 24:00. A special shopping bus links the residences to the Rosebank precinct on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
