WELCOME TO WITS PLUS INTRODUCTION Wits Plus is the official Centre for Part Time studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Our purpose is to offer a range of short courses and certificate programmes on a part time basis, involving evening and / or Saturday classes. Participants attend class once or twice a week (depending on the course). Most courses run over 12 weeks (a two hour lecture a week) with a revision session in the 13th week and a final assessment in the 14th week. Wits Plus also offers one year (full year) courses. Please note that these full year courses only commence at the beginning of the year. We believe our methods offer students time to absorb and apply material learned in class so that deep level learning is achieved and the course is a meaningful experience. WITS PLUS OFFICE HOURS During university holidays we close at 17:00 from Monday – Thursday and 16:00 on Fridays. CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO A CERTIFICATE COURSE Our courses are designed to assist people who are ready and prepared for tertiary education. Criteria differ from course to course however a specific course makes most sense if an applicant is working in the particular field. For certain courses pre-requisites in English, mathematics, economics or computer literacy are applied. Applicants are strongly advised to ensure that they meet the requirements of the course(s) they want to apply for. APPLICATIONS FOR ALL CERTIFICATE COURSES Please complete and hand deliver the application form for the certificate course(s) you wish to register for and attach a certified copy of your ID/passport, a certified copy of your matric certificate / school leaving certificate, and post school certificates (with full academic transcripts) and a brief CV (not more than 3 pages). On the application form it is essential to include your land line phone number and an e mail address. You don’t have to pay an application fee. Once the selection process is complete, you will receive a pro-forma invoice (made out to you or the sponsor – depending on who is liable for settling the account) and a letter of acceptance via e-mail and post. Payment for the course should be prior to registration date for the course, which will be indicated on your e-mailed and posted acceptance letter. LIBRARY ACCESS We regret that we are unable to offer short course participants borrowing rights to the Wits Library, however you are allowed to go and sit and work in the library with the available material. Remember the World Wide Web (www) offers a superb source of information on a vast range of topics and can usefully support your studies. Often textbooks are now supported by a publisher’s website. Ask your lecturer to recommend their favorite websites. TEXTBOOKS / NOTES Certain courses include the provision of a textbook and this is made clear in the course information for the specific course. In the case of other courses participants need to purchase their own textbook. Course outlines are supplied by the lecturer for each course. Notes are distributed at the discretion of the lecturer should he/she decides this to be desirable. There is no additional charge for course notes. ASSESSMENTS AND RESULTS FOR COURSES Examinations or formal assessments are run once for each course at the end of the period of tuition. There are no deferred, supplementary or re-examinations. Students who delay writing their final exam will only be permitted to write again the next time the course is offered on payment of a special examination fee of TBA. The results will be available for collection by the student as we receive the information from lecturers in the Wits Plus office – it usually takes about a month after you have written your final exam. We will inform you when the results and certificates are ready for collection. CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCE A Certificate of Competence is awarded to ALL COURSES for the successful completion of all tasks set by the lecturer, including essays, assignments, projects, tests and exams and attendance at 80% of the lectures. Note: In the case of deadlines for assignments, projects or hand-in exams we adhere very strictly to times as set by the lecturer. Certificates of competence are issued within 6 weeks of the publication of results and will need to be collected from the Wits Plus offices (we do not post because of possible damage to the certificates). Replacement certificates of competence will only be issued in very rare circumstances following a written request and explanation; there is a charge for a replacement certificate. LETTER OF ATTENDANCE We issue letters of attendance on request, for those participants who chose not to comply with assessment requirements but who do attend 80% of the classes and didn’t sit for an examination. It is important to sign the attendance register at each lecture. Letters of attendance are statements that you were present in class and do not indicate that any level of competence of understanding has been achieved. No replacement letters of attendance are issued. TERM DATES Lectures for Semeste 1 commence in February and end in June and lectures for Semester 2 will commend in the 1st week of August and end in November. Each course ends as lecturers complete the stated number of lectures. Lecturers usually have a one week break half way through the course. Discuss this with your lecturer.
