Markets and shopping

Arts on Main

Arts on MainThis is a hyper trendy day starting fashionably late with lunch at the Troyeville Hotel followed by a visit to Arts on Main. The Goethe institute has a gallery in the centre alongside others such as David Krut. Wander around the galleries and shops and have tea in the restaurant in the precinct. Afterwards take in an early evening movie at the quirky Bioscope where you can have either a beer and pizza whilst watching the movie or if it’s a noodle box night, yummy noodles.

Bryanston Organic Market

Bryanston Organic MarketOn a Thursday or Saturday morning visit the Bryanston Organic market and view all the alternative crafts and products on sale. This is one market where you will not find anything that is mass produced. Enjoy an organic meal at one of the food stands and stock up on organically grown food items for home.  If you go by car then stop on your way back at the huge roadside curio centre located at the top of William Nicol drive.

Market open: Thursday and Saturday 09h00-15h00.

Entry free.

Chinatown Derrick Street

ChinatownVisit Chinatown in Derrick street, Cyrildene and forget for the length of the street that you are in South Africa as exotic goods and unusual odours waft down this colourful and busy street. South African traffic rules disappear and the street merchants offer fresh Chinese vegetables that are totally intriguing. Very few speak English and even fewer products have English writing so shopping is something of a lucky packet exercise. Great fun at Chinese New Year.

Oriental plazaSpend the day at the Oriental Plaza followed by a walk around Fordsburg and Mayfair where you enter another layer of this fascinating city. Old buildings housing restaurants, sweet shops, religious icons, household wares, spices and clothes create colourful and diverting streets which are best negotiated with friends. Sandton City, Rosebank Mall, Eastgate and Cresta are amongst the best known and biggest malls in and around Johannesburg – take a GPS to find your way out!
