If risk taking helps you feel alive then the cooling towers in Soweto are where you need to spend a day. You get a superb view of Johannesburg from the top of the towers but it’s the abseiling, bungee jumping and other activities which are guaranteed to stop and restart your system.
Open: Fri-Sun from 10h00 to sunset.
Costs range from R260 for abseil to R480 for bungee.
If you’ve handed in your thesis and want to celebrate with no expense spared then consider an early morning balloon ride over Magaliesberg with a champagne breakfast to follow. It carries a hefty price tag of approximately R2300 but how often do you finish a thesis? If you would rather have a celebratory meal with friends in a lovely setting then consider booking a table at Casa Linga. Located north of Jozi in Muldersdrift it’s a perfect place for a long and lazy lunch or dinner.
Be extravagant and go on a Magaliesberg canopy tour. It is adrenalin pumping fun whizzing over gorges, the only sadness is that it goes so fast. If you are in a party of 10 or more then Canopy Tours gives a 10% discount. They include a light lunch in their tour. Ask for Sam and Jack as your tour guides and safety men, they are amusing and knowledgeable. Expensive but highly recommended. Count on a good two hours to get there.
Spend time practising your golf at the Wits driving range where you can also take lessons and hire clubs. Lessons for beginners are held at 17h00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Once you are ready book a game at the Parkview Golf Course which gives Wits students special rates. You will experience a day many office bound Joburger’s dream of.
Membership of Wits Golf club R350 per year
Special rate of annual membership for bona fide Wits Students at Parkview R1600.
On a hot afternoon if you are not a member of the Wits swimming pool then opt for the Zoo Lake Swimming Pool and spend your time chilling, swimming and sleeping or reading. For R5 you could hardly find better entertainment.
Get involved with a great SA pastime – spectator sports. Cricket in summer is hugely popular with young and old alike. Watch for international matches which are heavily advertised on national TV and usually take place at Wanderers Stadium. If soccer is your thing then nothing beats an encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates – the two most fiercely contested soccer clubs, try Soccer City for a match. Rugby is taken very seriously and seats at popular encounters are usually sold out, but if you can go it’s great fun even if you do not really understand the game. Ellis Park is the home of rugby in Johannesburg. Watch for rugby fixtures in winter. If that is too much effort then an easier option is Hotel Lamunu in Braamfontein which has a massive TV screen for screening major sporting events. You can down a beer or three and cheer with your buddies in typical 21st century disconnected style.
