Johannesburg is a fantastic city to live in with as many identities as it has names. It draws its water from the oldest river in the world, is located between two visible meteor crater impact sites and has three Unesco World Heritage sites on its doorstep. It is the place where two of the most influential men of the twentieth century, Gandhi and Mandela lived and formulated some of their core ideas.
Jozi, Egoli, Joburg, Joeys, and City of Gold are just some of the names you will hear and all refer to the same place. It’s such a big city with so many secret treasures it is hard to know where to go and how to access the city so we have provided you with an introductory set of itineraries to help you experience the essence of living in Johannesburg.
The suggested itineraries vary from frantically full days to complete chill days soaking up the sun next to a swimming pool. If you do choose one experience a weekend for a year, at the end of it you should have a sense of what the city and surrounding areas are about. The focus has been on an affordable set of activities to take you into the heart of the region that Joburgers experience. There are tourist type adventures and visits to places outside of the city, but apart from a few costly activities, you will see that you can have a wonderful time in this edgy, contemporary and restless city with its enviable climate and hugely diverse inhabitants.
