BSc Computer Science

The BSc Computer Science degree is now available on the part-time facility at Wits Plus.

Applications to study in 2020 will be open from 01 July to 30 September 2019

Students who major in Computer Science will be taught the fundamental mathematical and scientific principles behind computer science, as well as the important practical skills required. Students will be taught how to design and implement programs and how to analyse them to determine their correctness and efficiency.

PLEASE NOTE:
Part-time students DO NOT qualify for NSFAS or residence accommodation. This means that you need to be able to pay for fees, books and accommodation.

Foreign applicants need a work permit to study on the part-time facility.

Entrance Requirements

Wits tabulates the points score for all subjects on the following basis:

  • English must be taken either as Home Language or as first Additional Language. Foreign students presenting with English as second Additional Language will have the option of a foreign conditional exemption and / or English proficiency tests.
  • Maths is compulsory - Maths Literacy is not accepted and counts as a normal 'other subject'.
  • Wits does not distinguish between designated vs. non-designated subjects when calculating the admission point score (APS).
  • The APS calculation is based on the best seven subjects including Life Orientation.

For BSc Computer Science applicants require the following:

  • APS 40 points and above (applicants with 38 -39 points will be waitlisted subject to availability of space)
  • English HL or First Additional Language - 5
  • Mathematics - 6
  • Applicants between 38 - 41 points will be waitlisted subject to the availability of places.
Course Structure

You earn points as you progress through courses, and the degree can take you between 4 and 6 years to complete as a part-time student.

Students who have been accepted into the programme, will be assisted with the choice of their courses and planning of their studies.

Study Requirements

Wits Plus students are required to attend lectures on the Braamfontein West Campus in the evening. Students attend lectures one evening a week for each course being studied.

Normally part-time students are allowed to register for a maximum of two (2) full year courses or four (4) modular courses in a year. Experience has shown to us that it is very difficult for students to cope with more courses while working and also maintaining a healthy family life.

Lectures are usually held in the evenings (17:30-21:00) and specified courses or tutorials may be held on Saturday mornings (09:00-13:00).

This may be subject to change depending the final timetable.
