Exhibition walkabouts with Professor Revil Mason

Saturday 27 April | 10 am

Prof Revil Mason will take you through the 'Through the Eyes of an Archaeologist' exhibition, and relate his journey and experiences as an archaeologist, explorer and teacher. The tour is about an hour.

The exhibition showcases the archaeological work of Revil Mason, and celebrates the South African Stone Age and early Iron Age roots and the roles that these played in the history of South Africa. Mason is renowned for progressive ideas about the importance of the archaeological past to all South Africans. Mason tirelessly sought to convince officials of the need to recognize the African past. Mason excavated numerous hunter-gatherer and early herder sites in and around Gauteng and beyond, including Melville Koppies, Linksfield Ridge, Bruma, Kruger/Mohale Cave, Sterkfontein and Cave of Hearths.

Temporary Exhibition: Through the Eyes of an Archaeologist

Showcasing the archaeological work of Prof Revil Mason, this exhibition recognises and celebrates the African deep past, and the role that African ancestors played in the making of modern South African society. As a history of archaeology at Wits; it is both a celebration of a life’s work and an opportunity to see history through the eyes of an archaeologist. Beautiful archaeological artefacts are on display and you are invited to immerse yourself in the archaeological world through interactive exhibits.

DNA Ancestry Testing

Saturday 4 May 2019 | 09h30 for 10h00

The DNA ancestry testing session is two hours and includes a talk by Ms. Rajeshree Mahabeer of the National Health Laboratory Service on genetic ancestry testing, testing of participants (saliva swabs), and a guided museum tour.

Tickets: R2000 includes the testing kit, briefing session and museum tour. R200 if you would like to attend the briefing and museum tour only (no test).

Kids Fun Day: Ochre, Paint and Colour

Saturday 4 May 2019 | 10h00 – 13h00

Join in our fun and informative activities about ancient paint manufacture, art and colour. All ages welcome – we will have a range of activities on the go!. Food-Art restaurant will be open and offering some great specials
