
Applications are invited for the Headship of the School of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science.
The School of Chemistry is strongly orientated towards research, and currently ranks in the ISI top 1% of chemistry departments internationally in terms of research citations. Current research fields include bioinorganic chemistry, catalysis, coordination chemistry, crystallography, electrochemistry, environmental analytical chemistry, materials science, medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, solid state chemistry and surface science. The School’s research activities are centralised within the Molecular Sciences Institute, which includes 26 research-active academic staff members and approximately 70 graduate students, and it hosts one NRF Research Chair. The School is also responsible for service teaching to approximately 2650 Engineering, Health Sciences and Science undergraduate students, and the teaching of approximately 250 students intending to major in Chemistry.
The Head of School is expected to provide academic vision and leadership as well as managerial co-ordination for different units and programmes required to maintain and build on the School’s position of excellence. S/he will have attained sufficient academic and/or professional standing to command the respect and confidence of members of the School and will possess high-level managerial skills. The Headship will involve the overall management of the School, namely co-ordinating the teaching, research and administrative activities; planning and promotion of academic activities in the wider community; human resources recruitment and management; financial and infrastructure resource management.
Qualifications: An appropriate PhD and administration experience within a University department.
Remuneration is commensurate with the seniority of the post and will be negotiated on an individual basis with the successful applicant.
Appointment is from 1 Jan 2013 for a fixed period up to 5 years. However, the term of office may be shortened by mutual agreement provided it is not less than 3 years. The Head will be appointed to an academic rank commensurate with his/her standing; on completion of the term as Head, s/he will be transferred to the permanent academic staff of the School.
