The Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications for the headship of the School of Clinical Medicine. The Head of School will be responsible for the academic activities in all the constituent clinical departments (comprising Anaesthesiology, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics & Child Health, Neurosciences, Radiation Sciences and Family Medicine), for human resource and financial management and for its efficient administration. Responsibilities will involve coordinating teaching, research and administrative activities within the School and the development and promotion of academic leadership within constituent departments in order to maintain the School’s position of excellence and its diversity of interest and staff. The successful applicant will play a vital role interfacing with the Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development, the management of hospitals within the academic complex, the Faculty and the University.
The appointment is for a fixed period of five years. After the first term, the Head of School may apply for a further term of office; if unsuccessful he/she will be offered a position elsewhere in the Faculty, in an appropriate department.
Experience of administration at a senior level within a university department is an essential requirement and a PhD in an appropriate discipline would be an advantage. Applicants must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The applicant must have excellent interpersonal and managerial skills and must have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect and confidence of members of the School.
