It is hard to believe that nearly a whole year has passed since Wits Communications embarked on a weekly competition to celebrate Wits’ 90th birthday celebration.
Bringing a bit of light-heartedness to the formal celebrations, the Communications team set out to reward Witsies and friends of Wits at the start of the year for simply knowing the University and doing a little homework each week.
It turned out to be a big hit! Each week it seemed Witsies could not wait for the competition question to appear in the latest edition of the Wits Weekly alongside the name of the previous week’s winner. Word got around that the prizes were much coveted and the number of entries increased rapidly. As soon as the Wits Weekly newsletter hit subscribers’ inboxes, the entries started pouring in.
Since the first day that the competition was featured,8 February 2012, there have been 41 weeks and an equal number of winners. Every week staff members, students and friends of Wits entered in the hope of striking it lucky and walking away with the coveted prize – a range of various nice-to-have items from the Wits shop. The Wits-branded items proved to be very popular with the winners and the rest of the Wits community, and it very soon became clear that the visibility of the Wits brand was increasing around campus.
Each week a winner was chosen and required to collect a prize from the Communications office on 5th Floor, Senate House where a picture was taken of the winner with the prize. View the winners here.
More than 700 entries and 41 prizes worth more than R5 600 later, the competition draws to a close today – on a high with a grand prize on offer.
