Wits University has appointed Dr Viola Makin as the Academic Director at the Wits Business School (WBS).
Makin has more than two decades of experience in Business School programmes and at least 10 years in management positions, including serving as a Director of the Harold Pupkewitz Graduate School of Business, Namibia. She has taught at UNISA’s School of Business Leadership where she was a Full Professor of Strategy and Governance as well as teaching online for the University of Maryland, Washington..Her fields of expertise include: International and Competitive Strategy, Corporate Governance and Sustainability.
As Academic Director, her role is to review the academic quality systems and ensure that the WBS delivers relevant business education in line with international standards.
Bringing innovation into business education is also a priority on her agenda. A key focus will be the School’s flagship course – its MBA which remains of high academic standing. Makin is determined to make this “the premier MBA in Africa”.
“However in order to reach this pinnacle it needs to be relevant and competitive. Therefore my focus will be on bringing in innovation into business education, while at the same time retaining solid, sound and tested aspects of the MBA,” Makin says.
Makin holds a Doctorate in Business Administration and obtained qualifications in executive training and research at Harvard Business School, Wharton and INSEAD.
She is a Non-Executive Director of Alexkor, a South African public company whose main shareholders are the government and the community. Alexkor’s core business is the mining of diamonds on land, along rivers, on beaches and in the sea along the northwest coast of South Africa.
Her latest publication is a Chapter on Governance and Sustainability in J Hough, AJ Strickland & AA Thompson and J E Gamble, Crafting and Executing Strategy (2011).
