The Feya Faku Quintet has a strong reputation in South Africa. Its leader, the trumpeter Feya Faku, has spent many years performing and recording with South African and international greats such as Abdullah Ibrahim, Dave Young, Johnny O’Neal, Malcolm Braff, Gustavo Begalli and Bheki Mseleku. The band’s music elaborates and comments on South African jazz’s intimate affair with ‘hard bop’ and with ‘freer’ sound zones from the United States, Europe and local spaces. Mixed with this edgy hard-bop, the Quintet’s contemplative melodies betray their knowledge, and love, of western ‘art’ music.
The Quintet consists of Feya Faku (trumpet /flugelhorn); Sidney Mnisi (tenor saxophone); Andile Yenana (piano); Jimmy Mgwandi (double bass); Clement Benny (drums) and the programme will feature selections from the following albums: Hommage (1998); Tacit (2002); The Colours they Bring (2005) and Hope and Honour (2008) and new material.
