The Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience (SBIMB) and Wits Bioinformatics have invited Distinguished Scholar, Dr David Landsman (from the Computational Biology Branch, NCBI, NIH, USA) to visit Wits and share his knowledge and expertise in bioinformatics and computational biology. He will be delivering a series of events at Wits over the next two weeks as follows:
PUBLIC LECTURE: Is there ‘Big Data’ in Biology?
Monday, 8 April 2013
17:00-17:30 - Snacks before the lecture.
17:30-18:30 - Public Lecture.
Marie Curie Lecture Theatre, Ground floor, Medical School, York Road, Parktown.
Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
RESEARCH SEMINAR: Why do we need to pay attention to computational tools in biology and medicine?
Tuesday, 9 April 2013
12:30-13:30, with snacks to follow after the seminar.
Len Miller Lecture Theatre, 9th floor, Medical School, York Road, Parktown.
This seminar is aimed at researchers and academics.
COMPUTER-BASED WORKSHOP #1: NCBI databases and resources This workshop will cover the structure, connection and querying of the databases at NCBI. After the session, students should be able to access molecular biology, genetic, and literature information from public databases at NCBI using the web. Online and hands-on examples will be used.
Wednesday, 10 April 2013
11:00-13:00
Computer Lab 2, New School of Public Health building, Education Campus, 27 St Andrews Road, Parktown.
To register for the workshop, please contact courses@bioinf.wits.ac.za
COMPUTER-BASED WORKSHOP #2: The BLAST Tutorial This workshop will explain how BLAST at NCBI can be used to compare nucleotide and protein sequences to the databases. Again, online and hands-on examples will be used.
Thursday, 11 April 2013
11:00-13:00
Computer Lab 2, New School of Public Health building, Education Campus, 27 St Andrews Road, Parktown.
